But if I can ask for anything, it's that this peace finds its way here, too. Violence and acts of hatred against Jews and Muslims continue in alarming fashion: in Markham, in Montreal, in Ottawa. If violence at home echoed violence overseas, let peace overseas bring peace to our shores.

On Thanksgiving Day, I'm grateful for many things. But if today marks a renewed peace in the Middle East, with Israeli hostages returned, and the end of violence against Palestinians in Gaza, I'll give thanks for that most of all. As I have so much, I think of those who have lost everything. 1/

With the 2026 election just a year away, mayoral candidate @jleiper.bsky.social brings his Listening Tour to Ward 9 on Oct 22. As Councillor for Ward 9, I plan to be there to hear what my constituents have to say about what kind of future they want for our city.

Suburban implementation would likely only ever work in areas of greater density than most suburbs have. For example, if the outcome of the Baseline-Merivale Secondary Plan leads to significant density in a contained area, then it could potentially work.

A Ward 9 resident who works downtown / adjacent to downtown in an area poorly-serve by local buses could take LRT and then bike share to get to/from work. Honestly, it's not hard to conceive of how this could be of benefit. Your thinking on this is quite narrow in scope, to be perfectly honest.
seandevine9.bsky.social
If this improves congestion in / around the downtown core, if this extends the lifecycle of road infrastructure wherever it's used, it helps people in Ward 9. And for Ward 9 residents who work / play in areas where it's used, like me, it provides an easy and fast way to get around. 1/

If publicly-owned bike share gets more people moving more efficiently, quickly and healthily through the city, not sure what your concern is. The capital cost is minor compared to other systems, and it may play a big role in diminishing congestion.
seandevine9.bsky.social
Ottawa’s 1st attempt at bike share failed because it was designed for tourists rather than residents. Certainly can’t make that mistake again. But with over 100 North American cities embracing bike share, seems like Ottawa should give it a go, especially considering how short our winters are. 4/

I don’t know if you’ve ever seen / used MTL’s or Toronto’s systems, but they are extremely well-used, and contribute greatly to those cities’ transportation systems. Yes, they require upfront capital investment (as do roads), but those systems got corporate sponsors involved for operations. 3/
seandevine9.bsky.social
But very few transportation infrastructure project, if any, are profitable. Transit operates at a loss, even when ridership is high. Highways and roads are transportation projects that operate at a loss. The true measure is the benefit such infra provides, and if it’s worth the investment. 2/

Thanks. I was only asking because I know that city staff recently completed a new feasibility study that will form part of a staff report and recommendation coming later this Fall. I haven’t seen it yet, though I’ve discussed it with staff, so I wasn’t sure if that’s what you were addressing. 1/

Which internal report are you referring to?

Seems like have the same style of tourism when it comes to Montreal. Taking photos of infrastructure is all I did when si was there, too!

In Montreal with my family for the weekend. Will I take more photos of my kids or infrastructure 😂?

Just like in NYC, and Toronto, and Montreal, and in over 100 cities across North America, I’m excited to work with colleagues like @shawnmenard.bsky.social on bringing bike-share to our city. Let’s get Ottawa moving in the right direction.

I’m inclined to agree: spending taxpayer money on Lansdowne 2.0 hardly seems like the most pragmatic option, considering so many higher-priority needs like transit, infrastructure upgrades, road and sidewalk maintenance, pedestrian safety upgrades, the list goes on…

We hit the streets to ask Ottawans what they think about Lansdowne 2.0.

This is the 2nd time I’ve heard Edmonton City Architect Carol Belanger talk about procurement and design in his city. These are municipal buildings. They encourage excellence over cost, to get best value for residents.

And it’s great that Ottawa’s new Chief Planner Marcia Wallace is one of the guest speakers for today’s event, alongside some pretty exciting voices in Canadian architecture and urban design.

Great to be here with my team at Designing a Better City, organized by @toondreessen.bsky.social. This is an exciting conversation about how to make our city’s built form better, more sustainable and more beautiful.

Ottawa’s By-Law & Regulatory Services Department perform such a key responsibility to keeping our city safe, clean and livable. Was glad to join the Mayor, several Councillors, and Chiefs of Police and Fire in a ceremony recognizing the work of Director Roger Chapman and our By-Law staff.

The final night market at the Parkdale Market was tonight, very well-attended, and thanks to Tina and crew for inviting Natali Harea (Nat's Breads) and Sheila Whyte (Thyme & Again) and I to judge the second annual apple pie contest.

I’m at the Fisher Heights & Area Community Association’s AGM where I just learned that their new logo’s green outline is a rough depiction of the area’s borders: from Merivale, to Baseline, to Fisher, to Meadowlands.

This is one of my favourite fundraisers to attend. As the leaders & staff of Nelson House say, a shelter for women fleeing domestic violence is the kind of organization that didn’t have to exist. Glad to see it has such strong and passionate leadership, and to be there with so many colleagues.
seandevine9.bsky.social
Yes, the community association wrote to me about it. What a shame to see that happen.
