Listen, I am no more immune to headass takes than anyone else, but I don't think "the price of my vote is SUPPORTING THE RIGHT OF TRANS PEOPLE TO EXIST AND HAVE THE SAME RIGHTS AS EVERYONE ELSE" is one of them.

I do actually like both Cryptonomicon (my first of his books) and Snow Crash, but I don't think they're worth arguing over. His obsessions when he wrote them just happen to overlap with some of mine.

God, I hope so much that it's an actual MMO. There's a looooooooooot of wiggle room in the phrase "online game", after all, though the sheer world scale sure does sound right for an MMO.

I feel like most of them would end up feeling like Kingdoms of Amalur, a game I love but that sadly didn't really take off. Most of its assets and systems were designed to be reused in the Project Copernicus MMO that was supposed to follow.

We actually thought that was the case for us, but my mom is obsessive about genealogy and she discovered the link between us and them a few years ago. Siblings with very similar names combined with messy frontier recordkeeping kept people from spotting it sooner.

Yeah, I've seen three different versions of our name (the original, one still Germanic but wrong, one very noticeably Americanized). The "Germanic but wrong" one is the one that's still in use. The rest of the family changed back after a couple generations.

(Side note: My last name is rare enough that anybody in North America who has it or anything similar is related to me SOMEHOW, which makes this stuff relatively easy to track)

still uses the wrong spelling. Misspellings and corruptions still count as changing the name if that's what you end up having to use or the government won't recognize you!

I am so confused by people who insist this didn't happen. My ancestors were German. Their surname is composed entirely of Latin characters. And I have PERSONALLY LAID EYES on the immigration forms where a guy at Ellis Island spelled their name horribly wrong. One branch of the family (1/2)

were in a car together. He's been in decline for a long time now. He's had strokes, heart attacks, cancer, and slow but inexorably progressing dementia. It was another stroke that finally took him. My sister was with him at the end. She said he woke up briefly. Took her hand, opened (3/x)

on the same wavelength about a lot of things, especially when it came to dealing with my overbearing and selfish grandma. He taught me how to use all his shop tools when I was a kid. We built a Pinewood Derby car together. He listened to nothing but Bach and it drove me insane every time we (2/x)
