It’s varnishing day for this portrait ✨ It’s always so satisfying to see it come back to life with a coat of sumptuous, glossy elixir that is varnish.

A closer look at ‘self portrait in Trois Crayons’. I was inspired by the the sublime sketches of Leonardo and Michelangelo when I drew this, and I used a set-up with three mirrors to observe the downcast gaze—which interestingly made it feel less like a self portrait.

It's varnishing day 🎨💫 Adding the final protective layer to my orange masterpiece 🍊🖌️ This is the moment I've been waiting for - the final touch that brings everything together! 🌸 The colors are already vibrant, but this varnish is going to make it POP 🎉 Can't wait to see the finished piece.

Blocking in the background on this portrait. I often enjoy these more abstract elements of a realist portrait, where I can pls, experiment and find a way forward to balance the painting and bring it to life.

Putting the finishing touches on this portrait✨ It was all about the impastos, for me! I mixed some sun-thickened linseed oil into my lead white in order to give greater flow and texture to my impasto application on this final pass—and it yielded some really interesting effects.

Putting the finishing touches on this portrait of the beautiful @eve.madealey ft. For me, the height of joy in painting comes from the application of juicy impastos…..it almost feels like the whole rest of the painting process is just setting up for those moments….

Currently on the easel. I truly love this stage of a painting—drawing in paint, playing with subtleties of form and texture. I often find that the painting reaches a sophistication of likeness at this stage that is hard to for me to surpass in color, even at the end of a painting.
