Help your neighbors and get a Josh pep talk! 💜⬇️
With the Trump administration cutting off SNAP benefits, I think it's really time to pull together. I made a little donation to City Harvest, and if you donate to any food bank and tell me what your small problem is, I'll give you a pep talk in Monday's newsletter! (Send me your receipt too!)
Sent a bit to Tarrant Area Food Bank (DFW area). Thanks for the nudge! You’re a gem.
I’m honored to be a part of people’s kitchen decor. 😂💜
Wow. I hope he’s having a great time and learning tons. Really loved The Rachel Incident (Caroline O’Donoghue) and thought Woodworking (Emily St. James) was interesting. Loved The Colony (Audrey Magee) and A Visit from the Goon Squad (Jennifer Egan). John & Paul (Ian Leslie) is great. So many books!
Please message or email if you need an ear, or just want to talk about books. 💜

I’m so sorry to hear there have been tough times. Think of me next to Lin on your fridge, cheering you on! Gosh, the kids must be so big now! I’ve definitely been reading a lot. Been slacking on crafts, but I just bought a bag of clay to try and spark some creativity. We’ll see!
How have you been? I’ve been terrible at keeping up with everyone since Twitter fell apart. I’m adrift social media-wise, it feels like. 💜
This is very cool! 💜

Hi my wonderful #uglydogs & friends. I mentioned a few weeks ago that Bella and Moneypenny both need surgery. I lost my jobs in the DOGE cuts back in April and am currently unable to afford the care they need. Any help would be SO appreciated. I hate seeing my babies in pain. gofund.me/bfe99ebd2

Nothing but love to you, Mary. ♥️
May I suggest The Beatles? As a way of escaping into something else for a bit? Even better if you read from Ian Leslie’s wonderful JOHN & PAUL: A Love Story in Songs while listening. I feel like an exposed nerve, and this book and these songs are a balm.
Also, the cookies (pictured) are helping.
Battle doomscrolling by posting 5 small pleasures in (my) life:

1. The click of my camera shutter
2. My niece giving me a 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th) hug before she goes
3. When my autistic student says, “You are my very good friend.”
4. The last pages of a good book
5. My gma’s ID bracelet on my wrist
Battle doomscrolling by posting 5 small pleasures in life:

1. Cold side of a pillow
2. Autumn in New York City, sweater-weather temperature
3. Crocs (the shoe, not the reptile)
4. Finding stuff after thinking you lost it
5. Cats
Should I buy a half frame camera? It’s pink and costs less than 30 bucks.
Happy birthday, Will and Shawn! 💜
Wonderful movie. Ralph here was a formative crush.
Here’s kind of a chubby magpie.
Jesus Christ. That’s terrifying! I’m glad you’re both okay. 💜
Richard writes so beautifully and precisely about films and just being human.
I was so inspired by his review of CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, I made art of Elio and Oliver enclosed in a terrarium and sent it to him. (Because I’m a huge dork.)
I hate this push to get rid of critics. I love critics!
31. KIKI’S DELIVERY SERVICE, Hayao Miyazaki. Aforementioned niece just finished reading the book the film is based on, so we watched it (again) together. A small joy.
30. MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO, Hayao Miyazaki. Saw it this time with my brother and niece as part of Ghibli Fest. First Studio Ghibli film on the big screen, and it didn’t disappoint. It’s just gentle and beautiful and feels like childhood. And there’s a catbus.
29. 28 DAYS LATER, Danny Boyle. “Don’t wake up.” God, this movie! It’s great. Cillian is great. Naomie Harris is great. Brendan Gleason is great. Christopher Eccleston is great. All great.
28. MATERIALISTS, Celine Song. Oh boy, the ways in which I did not like this…Terrible ending. Also terrible beginning and middle. Not a rom-com, but also not a romantic drama. Just a hollow nothing that made me hate people a little (more).
27. The Phoenician Scheme, Wes Anderson. I kinda feel sorry for anyone who thinks Anderson is just repeating himself. There are so many joys to be had here. Benicio! The after/in-between-life scenes! Michael Cera! The hand grenades! Plus, it’s just very, very funny from the first minute.
26. OSLO, AUGUST 31st, Joachim Trier.
A film about depression and not quite being able to get your feet back under you. An ending that feels both inevitable and impossible at once. Anders Danielsen Lie’s face is a marvel.
