Not up for kids playing pranks, but round our way it's still fairly traditional, even if they do say "Trick or Treat".

It's something the kids still seem to love and one of the very few 'neighbourhood'-type events we still have 😁

I think it's always been bigger in Scotland than England.

As Samhain, as others have mentioned, but also as Hallowe'en (unlike the US spelling which now dominates, possibly as a result of the Carpenter movie).

I love it tbh, moreso when the costumes are homemade and the kids going guising...

Times we live in - people are understandably (and rightly) on a hair trigger to immediately and completely oppose the dangerous ideologies we see from the likes of Trump and Farage.

But sometimes that readiness goes off when it's not clear yet whether the situation warrants it.

We have incomplete information, and I don't think anyone should be rushing to immediately judge (in either direction) the letter writer.

Night's take is a bit premature IMO, because he doesn't know what they mean, he just assumes he does.

If his assumption is correct though, then I agree with him.

...then, yeah, fair enough, it's probably too fundamental a difference for a relationship to be worth it.

But they might not mean it that way - they might mean "we disagree about the monarchy, we disagree about full on socialism vs something more like social democracy (or whatever).

The problem we have here, is that we don't know what the letter writer means by "different politics" - a lot of people here are assuming they mean it in the same way Nighy seems to assume, ie the fundamental difference between left/right, anti-fascist/fascist, etc.

If his assumption is right...
