This is part of why I really enjoy John Wick's (not that one) D10 system for Legend of the Five Rings/Seven Sea. Its roll and keep so you are adding your highest dice which has a much more predictable bell curve while still allowing for some dramatic tension (plus exploding 10's feel awesome!)
