I am Saimi Hanma (formerly Kelly Brenner) and the author of The Naturalist at Home as well as Nature Obscura. I'm also an artist and photographer, focusing largely on invertebrates.

You can find my art, photos, writing, info and web shop on my website: www.metrofieldguide.com
the book cover for the naturalist at home: projects for discovering the hidden world around us by kelly brenner. the central image is a curiosity cabinet with various items like skulls, shells and lichens. the book cover for nature obscura: a city's hidden natural world by kelly brenner. it's a pencil illustration featuring a variety of nature such as a ladybug, crow, invertebrates, moss, slime molds and so on a charcoal illustration of a sea angel, which is a sea slug which looks like a winged sluggy devil a photo of a horned nudibranch from the front against a dark background. the sea slug is translucent with spiky cerata on the back which have brown lines and are tipped in orange

Which would all be fine if I wanted to dedicate myself to my current and future zines and really put a lot of my effort into this. To be fair, my books and zines sell more than my art prints and photographs at markets and in my webshop. So maybe that is the route I should take.

Of course this is a lot more complicated the more I look into it because it's not just the printer ($250-400), but I'd also need a long arm stapler ($45), a guillotine cutter ($60) and possibly a scoring pad/tool ($35) and that doesn't even account for my time spent assembling them. I can't win.

Turning down free help from a professional financial planner, only to turn to chatgpt? I just have no words for this level of absolute stupidity.

This article starts out with this and only gets worse.

They had money problems. They turned to chatgpt for solutions When Myra Donohue’s father, who is a financial planner, offered to help her with her finances, she politely declined

I grew up with roger rabbit so when I discovered that scene in anchors aweigh that waaaay predated roger rabbit, I was blown away that he pulled it off so perfectly. I need to watch them again too. I think I bought them all digitally ages ago.

I think I still love singing in the rain the best, that classic scene is just so full of absolute joy. But I'm also partial to anchors aweigh where he dances with Jerry from Tom and Jerry.

right?! he could dance so beautifully and sing and his smile turned me to mush.

why no, I had no friends back then, why do you ask

Little known fact, I had an embarrassingly huge crush on Gene Kelly when I was in my early 20's. Unfortunately it was too late to inspire my tap dancing, which I'd already quit long before then. Instead of crushing on the typical 90s pop culture actors, I was watching old musicals.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! I thought it was safe for me to watch with a 10-3 lead and the second I look at the TV Raleigh strikes out. I'm going back to my hole. 😭

Thank you!! I've felt this in my bones all my life. Humans have such an innate need to classify and group everything (hello taxonomy) that we can't ever step back and just look at something without needing to know where it fits first.

Books aren't good or bad, you just encounter them at the right or wrong time in your life. And reading the right book at the right time in your life is a magical, life changing experience.

(except moby dick, which is always bad)
