'If we approach nature without openness to awe and wonder, if we no longer speak the language of fraternity and beauty in our relationship with the world, our attitude will be that of masters, consumers, ruthless exploiters, unable to set limits on their immediate needs.' Pope Francis Laudato Si

It’s ironic that this happens the day after the Luxon Govt announced it will make the climate crisis worse by letting the dairy industry off the hook for its superheating methane emissions.

“EPA said the biggest threats to overall health of the country’s natural water bodies include animal waste, fertilisers & pesticides running off farmland and forestry”.

Politically backed ongoing wreckage of our natural environment for profit continues unabated.

Yesterday Luxon Govt embraced climate science denialism by stating they will never have regulations or pricing to drive down methane emissions, NZ's largest climate gas. Next day scientists state climate change has led to tipping point for corals. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

When the NZ's coalition govt took office nearly two years ago, its #WarOnNature started.

In that time, they've made a bewildering number of changes leading to environmental harm.

Greenpeace Aotearoa head @russelnorman.bsky.social has undertaken the gargantuan task of tracking them all👇

Nicola Willis promised affordable tax cuts and zero borrowings - OR she would resign.

Instead, Willis borrowed $12,000 million i.e. $12 billion & has created another $8 billion hole in the budget. She's now down $20 billion and counting #nzpol #kiwi

Luxon abolished the Govt fund to help industry decarbonise, as he said he didn’t want to subsidise them and carbon price signals were the answer. Then he gave $200m for more fossil fuel exploration and abolished price signals for agribusiness, the biggest polluter.

The main reason city streets are dangerous for children isn’t because of crime.

It’s because of cars.

One of the symptoms of the 'resource curse' is that Govt becomes captured by one industry. In NZ that is dairy. Methane is the dominant GHG for NZ but it is now exempt from prices or regulations to cut it, which means all other sectors have to carry the weight of emissions reductions.

Methane bubbling up in #Antartica - I wish it weren’t so. NZ farmers just let themselves off the hook to ensure they pump out more methane #climatecrisis #greed #nzpol

Methane makes up 48% of NZ's climate pollution. The Govt's grossly irresponsible announcement today that they will never have a price on methane, combined with their policies to increase the dairy herd, means that they have zero intention of meeting NZ Paris obligations.

Remember the old rightwing argument that all we needed to do was put a price on climate emissions and let the market do its thing? Well the necessary step was for the Govt to put a price on emissions. The current far right NZ Govt just announced it will never put a price on emissions.
