Though to be fair, this game was given about a 5-6 year dev cycle while Pokemon HAS to relase on schedule and for every region now. New anime starting? Game has to be out to promote them. New card set appearing, make sure the mons have anime eipsodes

Just to add to the Digimon point, they've got about 500 mons, everyone is obtainable through normal gameplay, albeit with a grind, and SEVERAL were made Ridable. Some reuse animations but there's several unique ones too
