Football writer. Otherwise into the usual stuff. Politics, music, literature, art, film, TV, natural world, long-distance train travel, cricket, golf, boxing, tennis, pro-celebrity subbuteo, himalayan bungee jumping. You know, normal human pursuits.

Accidentally discovered a great way to uncover bots. Put something ridiculous in your profile. I've been asked who my favourite celeb is in pro-celebrity subbuteo and told by a couple of young ladies they enjoy Himalayan bungee jumping too.

Bert Patenaude, who scored the first World Cup hat-trick, was born on this day in 1909 in Massachusetts, USA.

Patenaude scored the hat-trick vs Paraguay in the groups of the 1930 tournament and helped USA reach the semi-finals — their best performance at a men's World Cup.
The following year sixteen children and one teacher were shot dead in a primary school in a quiet Scottish town.
Wish win % was dropped when looking at managerial stats. Two examples. Both have ten games in charge

A wins five loses five. Win rate 50%
B wins four draws six. Win rate 40%

A has won 15 pts, PPG 1.5 B has 18 pts, PPG 1.8

PPG is a much more accurate reflection of how a manager has performed.
Terrific player. Bargain buy by Stan Anderson. Big Jack made him skipper right away. Great club servant. And when he could no longer perform to his own high standards in the top flight willingly dropped down to play in a lower division.

With Newcastle 😂
I really don't see how a home win over Falkirk and an extra time cup victory against ten men means anything at all in comparing the two.
Only four managers in Scottish history have won more domestic honours and they were all at their clubs far longer than Rodgers' three full and two part seasons. He's also the only boss ever to win successive domestic trebles & if he'd stayed first time round would have been a third.
Hmmm. He won 11/13 domestic trophies. Of the two he didn't one was on penalties. had their best performance in Europe in twelve seasons. The Old Firm have yet to accept while they are the biggest fish in a small pool they're a speck in the ocean.
Doubt it. He'll be 74 by then & he's not going to uproot himself to Glasgow. They'll use the international break to get someone in place.
I await Farage, Goodwin, Jenrick, Pearson et al to laud his heroism on GBN.
Here's how bad the Scotland goalkeeper problem is.

One will be 43 next month.

One is second choice at his club.

One was given a free transfer at the end of last season.

I'd go with the soon-to-be-43.
I know this. You know this. Anyone who's been involved in politics at any level knows this.

Except the people running the country.

It was always going to be impossible to govern for five years without tax rises. The bullet should have been bitten straight away.
There is one time & one time only when you can get away with breaking manifesto pledges on tax & that's right after you've been elected when you can justifiably say 'sorry but things are much more shit than THEY told us.' Rank amateurism to wait a year and a half. Same goes for 'due to Brexit.'
Toughie but I'll take a stab at it. Could it be because one is scoring goals and the other isn't?
A sentence you may never see again in several lifetimes.

Sunderland replace Bournemouth in the Champions League positions.
Couple of weeks back she said her toxic affair with her land rover was over. I reckon she's got enough to scrape through the winter.

This. A thousand times this.
You guys are good but this strikes me as a classic case of 'lies, damned lies and statistics.' How many of those smokers ten years ago who thought vaping less harmful are now themselves vapers? Thus creating an increase in the percentage of CURRENT smokers who falsely believe vaping is more harmful

This guy is worse than Arsene Wenger for using this excuse...
RAJU: Last week you were very critical of Biden's use of the autopen. But Trump admitted on 60 Minutes to not knowing he pardoned a crypto billionaire who pleaded guilty to money laundering. Does that also concern you?

MIKE JOHNSON: I don't know anything about that. I didn't see it. I'm not sure.
That's the image of hard as nails Barlow ruined. He was a very good actor though inevitably associated with Barlow. Such a popular character he appeared in three series. Z-Cars, Softly, Softly & Barlow at Large.

Gerd Müller, arguably the greatest pure goalscorer of all time, was born on this day in 1945.

He is the last player to have scored two hat-tricks in one World Cup (1970) and only Lionel Messi at Barcelona (672) has scored more goals at a top-level European club than Müller's 566 at Bayern Munich.
If there's a God then he/she/it will indeed know the answer is zero.
Just when Wednesday fans thought they could see some daylight ahead.
Yeah, that tends to happen when you're no longer in it 😜
