Yes, but when I'm driving from Cambridge to Bury along the A14 I think my focal point should be on the road in front! 😆

Catching our eye today is the tobacco plant!
In exhibition 'A body of knowledge' is displayed the earliest European illustration of the plant in a book from 1571.
The plant is currently waving its leaves in our @rcphysicians.bsky.social medicinal garden today.

A plant with large pointed oval green leaves coming off a single stem with a bunch of green buds at the top. Open pages of the book 'Stirpium adversaria nova’ (New observations on plants) by Pierre Pena and Matthias de L'Obel, 1571 showing Latin text and a woodcut illustration of the tobacco plant.

The rich mosaic of self-willed biodiversity at Cringleford, is threatened. We could survey and record it then tell the landowner. But perhaps the site just shows us what may happen when land is allowed to have its will.

Who will get a grip of meeting and balancing the needs of both humans and biodiversity?
#BiodiversityCrisis
Would people buy new houses which have settings in which nature is allowed to autogenerate & build richness on its own terms? Forgetting landscape architects who choose shrubs & lay turf.
A sign advertising expensive houses for sale at Round House Way, Cringleford. Land north of Round House Way, Cringleford. It is a level field which was, until recently, a mosaic of grassland and scrub. Here, brown patches show where bramble patches were and splintered stumps indicate the sites of trees. A rose bush loaded with scarlet rosehips. It is part of a mosaic of biodiverse grassland and scrub at Round House Way, Cringleford, in the suburbs of Norwich.

I can see a collection of dots in the Norfolk/Suffolk Brecks where it persists along field boundaries and often out in the fields too. Regular disturbance from potato/onion/winter cereal crops plus irrigation.

Am I right that African Nightshade is Solanum scabrum aka Garden Huckleberry? I read that Sticky nightshade aka Red Buffalo-bur, Solanum sisymbriifolium, has also been trialled. Both rare as wild plants in Britain at the moment although I've seen the latter.

As we tackle the persistent issue of Potato Cyst Nematode (PCN) in potato crops, our members are continually trying new methods of control as part of an integrated pest management approach. One member has sown an area of circa 1ha with African Nightshade as a trap crop!

When I was teenage I encountered Bill while birdwatching at local reservoir. At local school open day at the weekend I related this story to some 6th form students but they just looked blank. They not only didn’t know him but had never heard of the Goodies!! 😲
