Did not have "Zohran Mamdani makes a NASCAR reference on Fox News" on my 2025 bingo card but here we are.

Mamdani: "Andrew Cuomo is gonna say a lot of things tomorrow night on the debate stage. And frankly, I wish it was more like Nascar so New Yorkers could see the billionaires that were sponsoring him right on his suit jacket. He watches Fox News as well. So I'll just speak to him directly ... "

Shades of 1996 from Platner here!

Bill Clinton used the same line to dismiss Bob Dole's platform during the 1996 presidential election debate.

(Susan Collins was elected to the Senate in 1996, btw.)

h/t to my great colleague @willrabbe.bsky.social for flagging!

Some of the best snaps (📸) I got from Spirit training this morning
Spirit players Hal Hershfelt (furthest right, nearest to camera), Paige Metayer (middle) and Narumi Miura (furthest left, in the back) all are smiling and expressive while jogging in their green team warm-up outfits. Spirit player Heather Stainbrook looks back with a smile starting to form. Behind her and to the left of the photo is teammate Deb Abiodun, looking off to the right of the photo Spirit player Croix Bethune, wearing a puffy green Spirit jacket, biting her tongue as she smiles during warm-ups Spirit player Gift Monday smiles and sticks her tongue out of her mouth as she jogs

Spirit defender Kysha Sylla has been part of continental tournaments before in Europe with the UEFA Champions League.

"It's a challenge, we want to win everything, so we are all the time ready. There is no place for being tired or down because we are so competitive."
roey.bsky.social
González also laid out how a fairly new continental tournament like this can build the club's identity.

"We know how important this competition is for the future, because that's going to help us to maybe play against the best teams in the world. So we want to be there. That's our vision."
roey.bsky.social
González definitely did not downplay the stakes:

"This game is kind of a final to us because we know that we have to win."

And that "it's kind of a playoff game, so we're going to prepare for the game as if it was a playoff game."
roey.bsky.social
Spirit coach Adrián González: "It's not ideal to play every two, three days. But I think we are prepared."

Mentioned that the squad and lineup rotations are meant to balance giving chances to all players but keeping players protected and ready for future games, including the NWSL playoffs.

Got some reporting earlier today on the CONCACAF W Champions Cup!

The Washington Spirit will square off with CF Monterrey tomorrow in a matchup that will determine who advances to the tournament's knockout stage.

Platner now has a big-name opponent in Maine Gov. Janet Mills. Although she was expected to jump in, Platner has made a lot of waves as a first-time candidate.

You can hear more from him next hour on our show.

Not trying to spam your notifications but just gonna add that the clean air standards stuff, with money behind it from a Dem president/Congress, feels politically like an infrastructure win with like no downsides (esp. with more wildfires making air quality worse and something we're more aware of.)
roey.bsky.social
I think it comes from a place of needing people to mask *more* and not being heard.

From what I've seen from covering this for a while, the bigger push is toward universal clean indoor air standards, and requiring/providing masks in hospitals and doctor's offices, which feels more reasonable.

Fun fact: the U.S. banned Prabowo from the country for 20 years because of his alleged role in atrocities in East Timor.

The first Trump administration ended the ban in 2020 so that Prabowo, then Indonesia's Defense Minister, could meet with top Pentagon officials.

All told, they probably have been the 3rd or 4th best team this season.

It feels like there are just three very good defensive teams who struggle to score (Orlando without Banda, Gotham pinning too much on Esther, Seattle by design.)

They're not *bad*, they just forgot the offense at home.

For reference, Co-Op City in the Bronx, which is basically one apartment complex with a few dozen buildings, has just under 44,000 people.

Czech Republic just lost to a territory that has the population of a city neighborhood.
meninblazers.bsky.social
The Faroe Islands—population just 55,000—beat the Czech Republic 🤯

An astonishing result. The territory's population is smaller than the capacity of six Premier League stadiums, yet they've just won a third straight international game 🇫🇴

I don’t know how to describe this, but GK form feels like something that is harder to quantify and measured on a different, longer time horizon.

Absolutely should have gone for the field goal.

Jets innovating new ways to lose just for me. Gotta love it.

And it’s kinda giving “we’ve basically clinched but we’re hedging against a big Gotham comeback” with Morgan and Carle on the bench.

The mass layoffs of federal workers on Friday night swept up dozens of scientists with expertise in infectious diseases that have pandemic potential. But after The New York Times reported the dismissals, a federal health official said many of them had been fired in error and would be brought back.

This game is the best argument I've seen in a long time for getting rid of it permanently.
