The argument is that we had lots of innovation and new technologies for centuries without much measurable economic growth, up until ca 17th-18th century, when things started to change. I think that's the main focus of Mokyr's work at least.

Actually a very good question. Because of annoying fiddly technical reasons, some people still hit the paywall when they try to read Alphaville, not the reg wall, so some articles we make completely free so that there is no registration or paywall whatsoever.
