At some point in the 1990s, I read a story in FHM on this subject, where a nurse said they’d had a guy in who just said “I’m not going to make an elaborate excuse, I’ve just driven five miles to a hospital away from where I live. I’ve got a chair leg up my arse”. Which is probably the best approach

lotta people saying to donate to food banks which is great, but if that’s not available to you, often they are desperate for volunteers! shifts can be short, a few hours when you’re free, doing stuff like sorting boxes, making sandwiches, or delivering meals, depending on the org
