Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

I work for a non-profit. I feel like 90% of my day is taken up by me coaxing ancient technology (letter opener, letter folder, 25-year-old copier) to give me what I need, like Scotty talking to the Enterprise's engines.

Protip: Get a washcloth and run a part of under very hot tap water and place it on the zit. It will bring the crap to the surface and soften the skin to make it easier to pop/release pressure.

I was 10 the first time I went on a diet—FORTY years ago. Zepbound helped, but now it's no longer being covered by my insurance. I was actually feeling good about myself for the first time I can ever remember and now I have to pay $500 a month out of pocket. It's not fair.
