Still! Greece is a pretty poor country by EU standards. Feels bad that we struggle to achieve a lot of the good I see here in one of the richest parts of the US

It's also not really the kind of city that makes it easy to sell this kind of density. While there are some beautiful buildings here and a lot of rich history, there's also a lot of eastern European grime to the look of the place. I find it kind of charming, but a it's hard sell for others.

There is also no fare integration between the bus system and metro, though they seem to have some plans to fix that. This has made things a bit more confusing as there are currently two incompatible types of ThessTicket (bus and metro).

There is not much in the way of bike infrastructure. Most of the 2-wheeled vehicles you see are gas-powered motorcycles and scooters (in the Vespa sense, not the kick-scooter sense). All the 2-cycle engines in those and the greater prevalence of diesel makes for somewhat poor air quality

On the more negative side, it still manages to feel somewhat car-centric. While the side streets are narrow enough to slow traffic down and some are fully pedestrianized, the main thoroughfares feel somewhat hostile with relatively high speeds and somewhat limited pedestrian crossings

I'm currently in Thessaloniki, Greece which has ~71% of the land area of Berkeley, but about 2.5X the population. It's a dense walkable city with a robust bus system and a small, but very modern (fully automated) and high frequency (3 minute headways) metro.

Isn't the threshold 48 trains per day? Or am I looking at the wrong part of the bill?
(e) “High-frequency commuter rail” means a commuter rail service operating a total of at least 48 trains per day across both directions, not including temporary service changes of less than one month or unplanned disruptions, and not meeting the standard for very high frequency commuter rail, at any point in the past three years.

More cats of Thessaloniki, this time some strays that seem to have little insulated cat boxes in YMCA park
A brick wall with large graffiti that says ESL. In the lower right are a number of improvised, insulated cat boxes. Some of these appear to be made from coolers and others from upside down covered litter boxes. It's not very visible, but the one second from the right is occupied A black cat standing on a brick walkway in YMCA Park in Thessaloniki, Greece An orange and white cat relaxing in the grass in YMCA Park

OP is about Emeryville though. I think it also gets 2 Coast Starlight and 2 California Zephyr (1 each way) per day. I think that only gets you to 42 total though, which is still below the Tier 2 threshold (48).

Found a very chill cat outside a supermarket in Thessaloniki

No sign of the Kristi Noem Hatch Act violation at the SFO international terminal. Not sure if they're only playing it at some airports, only in the domestic terminals or if they already stopped playing it.

On high solar production days, batteries are the largest power source for 2-3 hours in the early evening. Most recently on October 5th. We've got a ways to go before we have enough capacity to last the whole night, but that's more of a deployment problem than a technology problem at this point.

*Sees a bunch of Saturn games in the background* That looks like a really cool thrift store! Is it local?

Amusingly, the Dai in Daihatsu comes from the kanji 大 which means "big". Though it's associated with the company because it's also used in the name of Osaka (大阪) where the it was founded.

There were also a lot of bills from the end of session to get through. But yeah, this is a pretty high profile bill so you would think he would want to sign it early unless he was planning a fancy signing ceremony (which did not happen) or he was on the fence.

California has no pocket veto. Unsigned bills that hit the deadline become law (though apparently Newsom has not passed bills this way previously). There was some reporting when AB86 got vetoed that implied the other bills were dead, but it was misleading
retrodev.com
Has he vetoed more? Last I heard it was only AB86? Looks like he signed AB727 today. The other LGBTQ Caucus priority bills are still pending as best I can tell

I don't think this one is 100% correct or at least not 100% up to date on some of the changes needed to get the bill over the line. It shows Contra Costa county as an "Urban Transit County" with a number of stops with upzoning, but the bill doesn't really apply there at all now AFAIK

So on a day like that, it's best to start charging as soon as I have about 1 kw of solar surplus so the house battery doesn't get full too early. However, on a sufficiently cloudy day I might struggle to get enough production to charge the house battery enough for the evening peak period.
retrodev.com
I only have a Level 1 EVSE for my car (we don't drive very far in a typical week) and at the lower 8 amp setting it only charges at a rate of about 1 kW. On a low-usage sunny day, this is not nearly enough to absorb all my excess production when the house battery is full.

Initial look into whether National Weather Service skycover forecasts would be helpful for predicting my solar production for the day is not looking too promising so far. Doesn't look like much correlation between the forecast and how good my production is compared to the ideal
Graph showing solar production in watts in blue and the most recent forecast for a given hour in purple. Production starts off strong, but gets very variable around 10:20 due to intermittent cloud cover. A bit before noon it dropped down to around 1000 watts due to overcast conditions before recovering somewhat around 2 PM.

This will probably get me canceled by the true Daft Punk fans, but I think while their other albums have some good singles there are filled out with a lot of really boring tracks. The Tron: Legacy soundtrack is literally the only one of their albums I like enough to own.

I wonder whether this "limited run" is because they think demand is limited, because it's not actually profitable at this price or if it's some kind of marketing tactic
