So I ended up depositing the money in the bank and reimbursed the University with a personal check. So it is impossible to trace even if the Chinese side paid for Carr’s trip. Note, they usually will not pay for air tickets directly. It’s usually through a cash reimbursement later.
My experience of dealing with China based institutions is that they reimburse guest travel expenses by handing out cash to them. That happened to me once. The university paid for the air ticket. When I handed over the cash to our admin people. They refused to accept and said that its against rules
