Rumor mill in the Dakotas is that one of them tried to warn NDSU that Indiana State wasn’t to be slept on.

Another rumor was that one of the Dakotas then replied, “Huh? You sound like the type of person who says they’re also scared of Chicago. Are you also afraid of the dark?”

Note, we started tracking ‘23 SDSU around this same time in the season as well.

It’s not meant to be a declaration that this squad will end as good or better than any of the Preeminent Five.

Nor is it an attempt to jinx them (this isn’t baseball, we can talk about streaks)

For context, the Preeminent Five’s:

* 1987 Holy Cross: 11-0, 46-10 avg (48-9 w/out I-A)
* 1996 Marshall: 15-0, 45-14 avg
* 2013 NDSU: 15-0, 39-11 avg (40-11 w/out FBS)
* 2018 NDSU: 15-0, 41-13 avg
* 2023 SDSU: 15-0, 37-9 avg

As QBs go, 4 currently sit top of the pack in the Payton race.

Your go-to for yardage and scoring efficiency is Cole Payton, with Andrew Body behind him.

If you lean pure passing TDs and yardage, Taron Dickens leads with Derek Robertson on his heels.

What’s the worst FCS program James Franklin could walk into and genuinely have a shot at taking to the title game within his first 2 years?

And follow-up, why does it seem like it might *still* be Youngstown State?

And it actually makes more sense than would seem at first blush. With his payout he could take a relatively low offer and negotiate with MSU to put difference toward assistants.

Get his mojo back coaching a more pure game.

All joking aside though, if Vigen gets poached by Oregon State or someone, Franklin would be wise to actually give the Bobcats some real consideration.

Premiere program, primed to compete for a title day one, and a chance to prove he can win big games without the P5 noise.

One of the conferences needs to step up and grind harder.

The UAC, SWAC, and OVV-Big South need to step up and at least make their “divisions” show they’re not average schmucks like the rest of ‘em.

The Patriot has jumped the Ivy to be the 3rd best, and the SoCon has now jumped the Pioneer to be the 11th best conference in OOC play.

But little change relative in terms of perception. The MVFC through the Southland should be multi-bid leagues, and MEAC through the NEC should be autobid only.
