Not a book to be missed; more thoughts coming soon in Profane Illuminations
A brief post for the new book out this week. I moved across the country in August, packed up our life in Ontario and came home to the Saanich inlet. Which happens to be where much of this collection is set.

A lot of that life isn't unpacked yet, but the salmon are running, so there are dolphins and pilot whales and bald eagles hanging around. Boxes are going to have to wait a bit longer. Would rather watch the seals.

Le Guin Prize winner Rebecca Campbell's debut collection is out this week!

Three-time World Fantasy Award Winner Andy Duncan says THE OTHER SHORE is “A landmark first collection from an extraordinary writer. Like an autoharpist from the hills, Campbell makes a high lonesome sound all her own.”

Pitch: someone calls an anonymous tip into ICE about a house full of illegal immigrants. ICE starts watching the house and decides to do a night raid. The immigrants are all vampires. The vampires called in the tip.

Okay I am NOT updating this graphic any more (go buy THE BUTCHER OF THE FOREST so I can feed my cats tho)

The cover of THE BUTCHER OF THE FOREST by Premee Mohamed on a dark green background with floral motifs. In golden plaques, we see: LitHub, BookRiot, Washington Post, Polygon, and NPR Best Books of 2024; Amazon Editors' Choice Science Fiction & Fantasy; Aurora, Ignyte, Nebula, Locus, World Fantasy, and Hugo finalist. A small plaque also suggests you just buy the stupid book, everybody seems to be enjoying it, you can see for yourself right here, seriously. This is the LAST DAMN UPDATE I swear to God.
Yes. And so true of education where students are consumers. Why wouldn't they use AI for writing assignments when the point is to exchange a bunch of money & papers for a degree? It's hard to tell them to think about process or writing-as-transformative if that's not the world they live in.

I'm editing a new anthology of sci fi written by sex workers for @workinggirlspress.bsky.social. It's called Liquid Silver (after the club/brothel in Tank Girl) and I'm so excited to see what my SW babes are writing!
Hey netgalley folks-- my collection THE OTHER SHORE is available to you guys. It's all about the Salish Sea, and the special kinds of beauty and weirdness you might find there. Forthcoming from @stelliform.press in October!

This list! This project is always an absolute highlight of my year, but what joy in this year in particular to see so many books so interested in community, in how we live in this wild present and future, in making new choices and forging new paths. A million congrats to these brilliant authors!!!

Each morning brings new atrocities. I'm trying my hardest to not let it change me; to not become as bitter and hate-filled as they are. My heart goes out to everyone suffering real trauma. My deepest respect to everyone fighting for justice and equality each and every day.

A few days left for anyone wishing to submit to Undertow's new Best Weird Fiction, collecting work from 2024. I almost forgot.

I had a few things out last year, but my favourite one falls just shy of the minimum word count:

Have to agree, this was a really fun afternoon. And I came away with a bunch of new books, which was kind of inevitable.

Great launch at @littleghostsbooks.bsky.social, my new favourite indie bookstore....it was like a gorgeous afternoon salon. Lovely to meet @rebeccacampbell.bsky.social and @mahaila.bsky.social - very much looking forward to reading their books. Many thanks, as always, to @stelliform.press.

This will be a must buy. If you haven't read "Arboreality", do it. It's a beautiful book.
The cover for THE OTHER SHORE, my short fiction collection, forthcoming in October from @stelliform.press. Kerry Pagdin's art is so familiar-- like the kinds of dreams I had as a kid reading (and re-reading) Watership Down. Which is, of course, the landscape of my heart, and these stories.

We're delighted to share the cover of Ursula K Le Guin Prize winner Rebecca Campbell's debut short story collection, The Other Shore. The cover art is BC artist Kerry Pagdin's "The Death of Ostara," a perfect match for Campbell's unsettling west coast speculative fiction.
