Super thrilled to have Dora's poems in this issue 🤩 I also got to read a draft of her new book and it's sooo good

There's a quote by Assata Shakur, one I think of pretty much every day.

"Nobody in the world, nobody in history, has ever gotten their freedom by appealing to the moral sense of the people who were oppressing them."

Truth.

Keep fighting against oppression, as she did all her life.
I read it too fast(because of book club) but will take a slower stroll through it later :)
Just finished Wellwater and it is dazzling. Solie is really one of our best ❤️
"What distinguishes her poetry is the skill with which she deploys her technique, the intelligence behind her offhand observations, and her commitment to hesitation, qualification, and doubt. She is incomparably precise, knowing just how long to let a poem go slack before pulling the line taut."

At fifty-eight, Karen Solie is one of our major poets. You might find her on her family farm in Saskatchewan

Poetry in Voice is open for free poet-in-class requests! It's really one of my most favourite and meaningful things to do as a writer. After several years, I've amassed a number of great ideas and activities that can be tailored to K-12. Check it out!

Happy to share the news that I recieved a Canada Council grant to help complete my second book. It was my first time applying for a grant and it feels unreal. I'm so grateful to live in a country that supports the arts in this way, (and hope it continues to)
Thank you Garth for inviting me to sign this and bear witness to the murders of Palestinian journalists ❤️💔
I co-organized and signed this open letter because silence is complicity.

244 Palestinian journalists have been murdered by Israel since the genocide in Palestine began. In response, 244 Canadian writers have added our names to an open letter calling these killings what they are: war crimes.
Hey, check out this fun "smashed" event where poets read work connected to songs from an album (Siamese Dream!) that a band then plays. I'll be reading with heavyweights Doretta Lau, Jane Munro, Junie Désil and others! Come on out! Oct 9th, at 8:30pm 🎸

Especially looking forward to this one. Elena Johnson and our newest member, the lovely Lauren Peat, will be hosting ❤️
Hi all, our next reading is coming up! We're excited to be part of the @wordvancouver.bsky.social festival for this one. The afternoon will feature @roblucastaylor.bsky.social, Hope Lauterbach, @drobnies.bsky.social, and Carleigh Baker! See you at Outsiders and Others at 3pm on September 14th!
Ha, nice note about that comma. Also love the panning out, talking about the room/accoustics/neighbour before returning to the dialogue. Such a neat way to give the last line more power and surprise
These are some lovely poems, Aidan. "The only way to truly know any story/is to take a minor character out for beers." ❤️

Carney plans to cut 15% to the arts. Here is a letter template to send to politicians to oppose this.

whenever I want to tell my sons that what they're doing is irrational and pointless, I have to remind myself that my main passion in life is arranging words so they give rise to strange ghostly feelings

My mom took a picture of me reading poems
ah just saw it (same moon!) taking out the garbage, and felt thankful that I had garbage to take out, that it gave me the chance to see it
Hey, here's a thing I'm doing out in Richmond with Catherine Lewis! There's an open mic that you can sign up for if you're around docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

or just come and hang out! I'll be reading a mix of old and new poems
Wow, that's amazing, Aidan, congrats!
