On October 26 1952, after visiting Cape Breton Island, American Abstract Expressionist Helen Frankenthaler painted the luminous “Mountains and Sea.” It marked a pivotal moment both in her career and in the story of American 20th Century art. She continued to make art for the next 60+ years.
