So on here I talk about hobbies and crack snarky data jokes. But once a week I also write a very long form data science newsletter. at www.counting-stuff.com
#DataBS

Here's a thread of old posts that people liked [ugh no thread writing interface] (1/n)
Counting Stuff
A weekly newsletter about the important, mundane, parts of being a data scientist, UX researcher. With some extra fun about tech and hobbies.

I wish more r18 illustrators from japan would post here =x

I can't help but think how that "chatgpt will write ai smut" announcement is likely because someone showed some techbros a "porn drives all tech adoption" meme

This week on Counting Stuff, I'm somewhat bitter that data roles have specialized to the point where I need 3 resumes now instead of 1. Also, a bit of ranting on how machine translation almost ruined TL years ago and now "AI" is following the same path #dataBS

A generalist in a "specialist" job market
Don't see "Full-stack" flying around that often any more

since i have 2 cases, I usually take my current 'main' and demote it down to be a media PC or something, then gut the old demoted one and shove in new parts to promote it to main 😅 you should've seen my original case dating from 2007. giant full tower hunk of sheet metal

aha, I have TWO Fractal design R5s that I've been switching between for the past ~10 years i'd have to pawn one off to make physical space for a new shiny case =D
randyau.com
sliiiiiick. all my cases are old school solid sides, to be tucked away under a desk

yeah, the supply chain blowing up due to tariff bullshit is the biggest worry... my current rig can probably last me another year or two but who knows what the world will look like then

For the Shadow of the Colossus story, we interviewed 14 people including project leads Fumito Ueda and Kenji Kaido, hired Gravity Rush concept artist Takeshi Oga to illustrate the cover, and put together a 10,000-word story with help from @milkman.bsky.social @shmuplations.bsky.social and others.
Shadow of the Colossus: An oral history
Celebrate the 20th anniversary of Team Ico’s masterpiece by looking back with 11 people who worked on it (and three who didn’t).

we've let the cat lick certain foods because it usually learns it doesn't like it and will stop on its own... we definitely wasn't expecting it to go all in on cornbread

yesterday we learned that the cat likes to lick freshly made cornbread =\

blech... I want to wait a bit until I completely rebuild my desktop tho... let the AM5 platform shake out a bit more, DDR 5 to clean up... and whatever shitshow is going on with GPUs

ugh ok PC is acting up again... very likely driver issues... disabled C-states already but still happening off and on, usually when i'm not doing anything particularly intensive it'll just lock up...

when a relative had theirs stolen w/ their wallet, even w/ a police report and such, it was a giant administrative pain in the ass to get a replacement doc w/ trips to official service centers and such. and that was 5-10 years ago let alone now....

so... much. "WE NEED AI ML!!!!" job post spam and I'm honestly wondering when the bubble blows will all that just evaporate

Any day that I have to dig out my chisels for even a couple of minutes is a good one, I guess.

Installed the lock I rekeyed last night
Picture of a deadbolt hole in a door jamb, there is a chisel blade placed at the bottom of the hole indicating it is cutting out a square section to receive the strike plate

Worse. Its for shitty contract agency work. 😱

finally getting around to re-keying one of the last legacy locks in the house
picture of a schlage lock cylinder standing on a green cutting mat, a pin gauge and plastic follower rod is also on the desk, another cylinder is in the far background

So we were/are supposed to be in the middle of a nor'easter right now but honestly it's been just a rainy, chilly day. I guess the main action is out on long island

Ever since I got the meat grinder attachment for the mixer, I've never had to bother goign to the market for ground meat anymore... and it'd be nice to do the same for slices...
randyau.com
so... for about $300 I can get a 10" manual deli slicer from the restaurant supply (there's cheaper ones on amz but.. y'know) technically they're not strong enough to slice cheese (which isn't a big concern for us) and i'm debating whether I want one for hotpot slicing

I'm not the one empowered to make mutli-million dollar mistakes and then fail upwards for it!!!11!1!1!1

TIL that I can rebrand like a solid chunk of my current research job as some flavor of "feature engineering" because, like, fucking researching how shit works and collecting correct data for it needed a name?
