No.1 #1994AlbumsTop20 It’s Heaton’s masterpiece, supported by Rotheray, Abbott, Hemingway and co, it is peak South. Not their biggest commercial success, Carry On Up The Charts from later that year would see to that, but creatively, musically, lyrically, this is the standard.

From the live at the BBC album, so a bonus chance to stick this excellent album track in from Blue Is The Colour - Paul & Jacqui trading vocals in the best way possible!

I have picked most Kid A tracks across many challenges so this time let’s give the closer some airtime!

It’s a beautifully orchestrated track, contrasted by Thom’s maudlin vocal delivery.

I think you’re crazy, maybe.

She definitely wouldn’t have liked MC then!😁
Wasn’t Mini-Correct on Miaow the reason Brianna left? I know Paul regrets the lyrics on 36D.

Carry On Up The Charts was a massive success, reenergising the band for another decade of hit making!

Here’s the shortened version of 36D, a song you’ll have to play yourself as Paul no longer performs it & you won’t hear it on the radio.

Little Kix ended up Mansun’s swan song, even though it felt they’d only just started! It didn’t land with everyone but it’s full of good honest rock tracks with the usual orchestral flourishes that this beauty benefits from.

I could have gone Novocaine, Susan’s House, Guest List, any really from Eel’s fantastic debut, but the warmth of the title track wins the day!

This was the ‘year’ of bewilderbeast with Badly Drawn Boy everywhere and the album a commercial and critical success.

Gaze arrived on the wrong side of their peak, Jacqui had packed her bags but the female vocals remained strong.

Heaton and Rotheray were still writing well together and this is track is top drawer South.

In the charts yes, but dig a little deeper and most styles are covered still, now whether they are much cop is as ever, totally subjective 😁
I’d put Gaze towards the bottom end mate, but think it was a bit more consistent than Superbi. Got a cracker from that album up soon👍
I meant my taste in the 80’s - get your point though👍

U2 nailed their first album of the millennium, packing it with big anthems and huge choruses.

This is the, almost, title track.

Black Grape were right there at the heart of Britpop with their debut album, this the pick of a groovy, enthusiastic and highly contagious set of songs.

One of the great cover versions, this of the famous Travolta / Newton-John upbeat number, reduced to an aching ballad of a demanding relationship.

‘My’ era, gone were the poppy 80’s, now I understood music a little better and started to explore.

We kick off with a top band, still going strong and judging by last night’s gig in Brum, plenty of new stuff coming out.

From that great 1st album…

Always up there as a favourite band, even through the Britpop days. Led of course by Sir Paul Heaton!

There’s 14 albums, inc comps, on Spotify so I’m picking a track from each, and ranking!

Superbi was a bit tired, with strong ‘moments’.
