Wow, damn. Evil movie. Brilliant.
Time to finally see what the hubbub is with this one. Been sitting on it for quite some time.

Film 30/31: "Tales of Halloween (2015)"

A very fun anthology movie that emanates strong Halloween spirit and is a proper silly good time. Perfect movie leading up to the holiday. Would make a great double feature with Trick 'r Treat.

The late 90's and early 00's way of reporting on Japanese media from sites, magazines, and shows truly did incomprehensible damage that we are still trying to escape from.
Haven't heard of Monolith until now, will be checking that one out for sure. Thanks for the rec!
I had my prior job for 10 years before this year, unfortunately I am one of those nearly 1 million now.
Absolutely agree, it's far far too good for it's current status.
Damn straight! For a movie that ostensibly takes place in singular rooms, it went so hard on it's cinematography and visuals. Extremely evocative imagery being sold by it's dialogue AND it's visuals in tandem.

Thinking about "The Vast of Night" again and how this movie still doesn't have a proper physical release. An entrancing and beautiful movie marred by being stuck in streaming compression jail.

Zombi 3 being known as Zombi 2 OR Zombi 3 always kills me.
That's such a cool venue, very jealous!!!
Del Toro's Frankenstein was beautiful. A lavish and gorgeous adaptation. Jacob Elordi's Creature was as perfect a casting as I can imagine, his performance was equally as intimidating as it was moving.

Can't wait to double feature this with Eggers' Nosferatu some time in the future.

Film 29/31: "Raw (2016)"

A complicated, upsetting movie that challenges the viewer. Gut wrenching, but artistically profound.

Looking at old drawings to post... I don't really do things like this but it was fun 🤭

Hell yeah, I own a full set of these and framed my favorites. Definitely my favorite Topps set.
Bring Her Back is interesting for this specifically because it is a very upsetting and harrowing movie, but it's compelling and made with an eye for keeping you engaged enough to not be completely off-putting in the way some other films in that category can be, if that makes sense?

Film 28/31: "Alligator (1980)"

Managed to impress by being a fairly above average Jaws "ripoff". Some fun characters and actual messaging weaved in alongside some very fun giant alligator carnage.

Anime is in a weird place with storytelling mediums where it's been marred by decades of leery, shallow, misogynistic content that we're predisposed to not give benefit of the doubt when it may actually be using sex or sexual imagery to inform it's themes, rather than being there to be exploitative.
And none of this is even beginning to touch on his relationship with Pochita and the imagery and meaning behind the chainsaw as his specific devil tool. One of the most phallic, masculine representations in horror, but with origins relating to birth and womanhood. (I may be doing an essay on this)
Maybe I feel particularly frustrated by people misconstruing his character because I was once that aimless, shallow, hormonal teenage boy. I feel a deep connection to Denji, it can be tough to watch, but everything he thinks and feels is, for better and worse, true to the experience.
It's easy to scoff at when Denji imagines all the women in underwear as a leery anime moment, but there's a reason Angel's there. Denji's conflicted with his sexuality and exploring possibilities. It's meant to show he's reflecting on how he feels about Angel because he is feminine presenting.
Also I wanted to add, since I saw someone disparaging Denji saying "I'm not into guys" at some point in the new film. This line isn't just there for a gay panic gag, it's projecting Denji's insecurities and his inability to truly understand where his feelings lie.
Denji's journey is common, but isn't one to envy and it's worth witnessing and recognizing this as young men so we can better ourselves without placing that onto the women around us.
A story like this existing, in a popular shounen no less, feels so important to me, because it is a male author tapped deeply into an experience he recognizes as harmful attempting to communicate through the safe lens of fiction that Denji is not in a healthy place.
