My most recent book that has actually been published is Shifting Currents: A World History of Swimming (Reaktion 2022). (available here: a.co/d/7rCKdSL)

Shifting Currents explores centuries-old global tensions around race, class, and power through people's changing experiences with swimming.

Figured it out: it's Michael Feige, Landwirtschaftliche Produktionsanlagen römischer Villen im republikanischen und kaiserzeitlichen Italien (De Gruyter, 2021).

Lest you think I go around randomly reading German for fun, I probably started by reading this review in English:
Landwirtschaftliche Produktionsanlagen römischer Villen im republikanischen und kaiserzeitlichen Italien – Bryn Mawr Classical Review

The degree to which we ever were one depends a lot on your racialization, and to a lesser degree on your gender identity and social class.

🏺argh I'm thinking about a fairly recent academic article showing that archaeologically there was no major reorganization of Italian farms in the Late Republic that would have made slave labor much more efficient than free labor: can anyone point me to the citation?

Border Patrol “attempted to arrest a plumber working inside a Logan Heights home but left empty-handed after the homeowner refused them entry.

The homeowner told agents she would not allow them inside because the warrant they presented did not include her address and lacked a judge's signature.”
Federal immigration operations target San Diego neighborhoods, sparking community resistance
Federal immigration agents conducted operations in Logan Heights and Southeast San Diego on Friday, with community members capturing footage of the enforcement actions.

I thought we already were in the same country as the South? how can we annex it any more than we already have? Anyway I was just looking at the map and seeing that Native-majority and black-majority counties had the lowest life expectancies. I agree that many White people in those areas also suffer.

Today in Portland, a fed shooting pepper balls from the roof of the ICE facility was so eager to aim for people’s heads, that after shooting one photographer in the head and another in the upper arm, they accidentally shot a DHS agent in the head. This photo shows the moment of impact;
Riot cops standing a street with less-lethal weapons, and one in a gas mask has a cloud of pepper dust around his helmet.

Adelita Grijalva won her election 19 days ago and she still hasn’t been sworn in.

The government has been shut down for 12 days with no end in sight.

They can stall as long as they want but the Epstein files ain’t going away.

Sorry! I’m sure you know more about it than I do. But it’s surely not a coincidence that the poorest counties are also the Blackest ones?

ICE in Chicago detained two people (that we know of) for filming them today, a cyclist and a neighborhood rapid responder. This in addition to tear gassing another neighborhood and brandishing weapons at rapid response—both things that have also already been going on for weeks.

This would be GREAT paired with my article in doctors in the Klan in the 1920s.

New article out this month on how doctors become fascists.

50% of German physicians joined the Nazi Party––twice the proportion of any other profession. US doctors today are arguably the most conservative in the world, and we're heading along a similar path.

People are spontaneously posting up near any laborers or street vendors they spot. Just saw a rapid responder guarding a man working on a building exterior. Many things are terrible today but lord, this stuff matters.

There are a tremendous number of ICE watchers out in Rogers Park this afternoon after some early morning abductions.

People are guarding churches and patrolling alleyways. Ran into Alderperson Hadden. First timers tell us they're primed and ready to use their whistles.

I’m horrified to hear that two people were kidnapped by ICE in Evanston this morning.

There’s a protest at Home Depot shortly. We’ll be delivering water and supplies to protesters — I hope you’ll join us in standing with our community.

What shortens your life: racism against Natives and Black people, primarily.
Map of life expectancy (average age at death) in the United States (though labeled "America"). Shows much lower life expectancy throughout the Confederate states, and where there are a lot of Native people.

I've made scrambled eggs in a microwave but I found them rubbery. Still, others may have better methods.
quatrus.bsky.social
Bring a mug, though, it's nasty in the styrofoam ones.
quatrus.bsky.social
yes, exactly, it's just fine. I mean, at home I use a kettle anyway for aesthetic reasons, but it's perfectly possible in the microwave.
quatrus.bsky.social
You can also easily boil water in the microwave for tea.

I make oatmeal in the microwave using old-fashioned oats: put oats in a bowl, add enough water to see but not so much as to cover, a pinch of salt, don't stir, and microwave for one minute. Add fruit or nuts or whatever.

Attacks on the federal workforce are also attacks on Black workers, who are overrepresented in the public sector.

Black unemployment is 7.5%. I'm reminded of Coates' observation that Black Americans regularly experience conditions that would be considered a crisis if whites faced them.
