the directing is so stylish too, with crazy lighting and fun effects. THIS is the best showa gamera film without a doubt, it really amplified so much of what I enjoyed about the previous flick while leaning tastefully into b-horror territory

messy gamera vs barugon.

in this flick we have a truly menacing kaiju foe in the form of gyaos, who looks like what happens when a dragon somehow fucks the shit out of a vampire bat. he drinks blood, eats people and hides from sunlight so the vampire label isnt too off at all.

gamera vs gyaos (1967) takes all the praises I lugged at the previous film and amplifies them to the next level. its got the perfect amount of 60s sci fi charm, a grounded working class struggle as the focal point of the plot and even bloodier kaiju action than the already (cont.)

barugon is what makes it feel like the first true gamera film and with that, out of all the one's I've seen so far it feels the most accomplished and perfected

Hell, even if you don't like the human plot much, there's still plenty of blood and fun kaiju destruction to keep you entertained.

the acting is also much better on the humans side than in the previous film, with an actually enjoyable plot sort of reminiscent of indiana jones? there's no kids around to bog the film down making it perhaps the most enjoyable of the showa era.

there's more explosions, bigger sets to destroy, better paced and barugon is such a delightfully weird little dude shooting his rainbows an shit.

amazing destruction and sets, pretty fun human cast, gamera looks awesome on his first outing theres a lot of great frames of him in this. gotta love how much of a terror he is too, a comparison to 1954 godzilla I can def draw a line directly to:
Both are more horror focused.

started with gamera the giant monster (1965), which is pretty cool actually! despite the dark tone it had a wonderfully awful american dub which def shorthanded it but I could tell it was something more than just a Godzilla clone like
Its got different beats it goes for even with obvious nods
