We have some hopefully good news. Our regular vet called. He thinks he can get Honey safely through her mass removal after her 30 day doxycycline run. That would allow us to treat the heartworms by the slow kill method, which is safer for Honey!

Theodore is heartworm negative and mostly healthy with a little bit of flea dermatitis and demodex causing hives. He needs to be neutered sooner rather than later, so that we aren’t risking a pregnancy with Honey. He got Bravecto today and we scheduled his neuter for the 30th.

Angus is heartworm negative and his mass is a lipoma. He also has a dental infection that has progressed to abscesses at the roots of some of his molars.

The faster treatment (which is the best course for her given the mammary mass) is a course of three shots, with supportive doxycycline and prednisone treatment and crate rest. We started the doxy today and she got Bravecto for the flea dermatitis.

Honey has a skin infection as a result of flea dermatitis. She also has a mammary mass that really needs to be removed because it has the hallmarks of potentially being aggressive. She’ll be spayed at the same time. BUT… We can’t do that yet because she has heartworms.

All together we spent $700 for rabies vaccines, health checks, heartworm tests and medications (breakdown of everything to follow). We’re probably going to be laying out at least another $1000 minimum for additional critical treatments. So please donate if you can and share this if you can’t.

The five newcomers had their intake vetting. It wasn’t all good news, even though some of it was expected. I’m going to cover the worst of it first and then I’ll do individual posts on each dog to get into the rest.

But they need their intake vetting here (health check, heartworm test, rabies vaccine) treatment for any existing health conditions, and all of them except Angus will need to be spayed/neutered where possible and appropriate.

What we know about them:
All of them were owner surrenders which means they don’t get much time when the shelter is full. Honey, Theodore, & Amelia came from the same home. Hazel & Angus were separate surrenders. They’ve had basic vetting at the shelter (parvo vaccine, Bordetella, deworming.) (3/5)

A 10 year old, 8 lb Chihuahua mix named Hazel, a 16 year old 8 lb Chiweenie we’re calling Theodore, a 77 lb 8 year old Great Dane named Honey, Theodore’s 8 month old daughter, who is now named Amelia, and a 10 year old mutt with a massive abdominal tumor we’re calling Angus. (2/5)
