My question is if the subordinate is protected from layoffs or discipline and what the value of that protection is. In many ways protection from dismissal is more valuable than a pay bump.

My serious take is that the LIRR provides pre-Great Society welfare benefits to the working class by means of a cross subsidy. One of the last places in the country to still work on this model.
