Surprise Wednesday

A ticked tabby sits in a laundry hamper.

Ashley isn’t a jumper. So when I went to put some clothes in my hamper and spotted her in there I was shocked enough that I stopped talking while in the middle of a sentence (ask my family, they’ll tell you it doesn’t happen often).

I later told my kids that my brain exploded from the cuteness, while brandishing this photo on my smartphone.

Reminds me of how when we visited stores in Iceland and Italy last year, my older kid laughed at seeing a certain brand of appliances on store shelves, and then my younger kid would chime in with “Why is she laughing? Is it a bad word?”.

There’s some wild choices out there for European brands…

This is why I don’t rely on mega-blocklists to block people. I prefer to do it personally, one at a time.

Pity that this also means JD Vance will never know that I searched for his account just to block it, but some sacrifices must be made.

(The show handles it humorously, but the plot is based on real critiques of how facial recognition systems are flawed because no facial patterns they can learn manage to fit 100% of a population. Plus the eventual resolution to “reboot it away” is surprisingly wise.)

I go by the Better Off Ted rule (it was a workplace sitcom from the aughts) on facial recognition: the more you try to fix the problem, the worse it paradoxically gets for those affected.
