Let’s be clear: we cannot be planting trees in Africa to cancel out oil and gas emissions in Europe. Every tonne of fossil carbon is permanent.

Power Shift Africa Executive Director, Mohamed Adow, reminds us that fossil fuel companies are profiting from pollution rather than fighting it.

Their “green” investments are a drop in the ocean compared to their dirty portfolios.

The World Bank should be backing sustainable renewable energy systems that directly serve people — not false solutions.

Who’s Controlling Our Food?

Fossil fuel companies have embedded themselves in:
⚙️ Fertilizer production
🚜 Farm machinery
🚛 Transport + packaging
🛒 Retail and waste systems

They’ve turned food into a commodity. Africa must reclaim control of its food, seeds, and systems.

Green doesn't always mean clean

Many of these initiatives:
⚠️Threaten local water supplies
⚠️Are pushed without community consultation
⚠️ Prioritise energy exports over local needs

We must reject extractivist “green” projects that risk our people and ecosystems.

Africa’s agricultural systems today are still influenced by colonial legacies and corporate dominance.

Today, this model continues through:
👉🏽 Export crops over local food needs
👉🏽 Industrial agriculture & synthetic inputs
👉🏽 Corporate control over seeds
👉🏽 Loss of indigenous seed varieties

New Research: Big Oil’s False Transition

For all their talk of clean energy, the world’s biggest oil and gas companies own just 1.42% of global renewable power capacity.

Big Oil remains deeply committed to fossil fuel expansion.

Did you know?

In 2021, a devastating wildfire struck Table Mountain in Cape Town. The next year, KwaZulu-Natal faced the worst recorded floods in recent history, tragically killing over 450 people.

Our school’s workshop will connect the dots between fossil fuels and the climate crisis.

Governments and corporations see conservation areas as carbon sinks, lucrative for global carbon markets.
But these projects often displace communities.
In Ngorongoro reports allege the community was denied access to healthcare, education and even voting right.

We can not have climate justice without land justice

In Tanzania’s Ngorongoro area, Indigenous land is being sacrificed for profit.
The Maasai in Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Area have lived as custodians of nature. But today, their very right to exist on their ancestral land is under attack.

The Mangoase community has established a seed bank to preserve food crops and neglected plant species.
Seed banks are emerging as essential in conserving indigenous African seeds at risk of disappearance.

Imagine this: a factory in Europe emits thousands of tonnes of CO₂. Instead of cutting emissions, it buys credits from a forest in Uganda.

On paper, they’re “net zero.” In reality, emissions still rise, and the Ugandan community gets minimal benefits, or worse, loses access to its own land.

Tomorrow, 8 Oct 2025, Power Shift Africa and Africa Finance Watch will launch the AFREXIM Campaign Factsheet, showing how the bank’s finance flows are shaping Africa’s energy transition.

Is North Africa’s food future under threat?

Algeria, Egypt & Morocco are facing extreme weather events, putting agriculture, water and livelihoods at risk.

In response, governments are partnering with foreign agribusinesses to develop large-scale farms in the desert.

Colonial exploitation didn’t just steal resources; it built systems that locked many African communities into ecological and economic fragility, vulnerabilities that climate change now makes worse.

Today, climate hazards mirror these colonial legacies.
