I think the internet has made us all a bit too comfy critiquing ppl that we don’t know and we shouldn’t assume someone wants criticism, constructive or otherwise, unless they request it 🤷‍♀️ (this goes for mediums besides writing as well)

I’m not submitted an essay for a grade, I’m just sharing smth I’m proud of that i think others will enjoy. I wouldn’t go up and critique a musician playing at a bar or an actor I don’t know in a community theater play.

I also don’t think I really agree w your sentiment about ppl needing to stomach critiques. I’m not saying no one is allowed to (esp if there is smth of major concern in your fic like racism ableism etc), but sharing smth isn’t the same as consenting to critique.

I personally think this expression is best used when ppl are demanding things of authors (ex different positions, dynamics, aus, etc) as if the author has nothing else to do besides write whatever a random person online tells them to.
