In my moments of tepid hope I think I see a definite move away from Brexit. However it will just be a slim pickings for pro Europeans. “Stick with us, we’re playing the long game”. Well, I’m 80, so I want a short game. So will they look to join the SM and the CU and sod the manifesto? Hmmm.

Ever since I finished Question Time, Reform have massively been on the attack.

Including a rant from Richard Tice entirely designed to distract from Reform and Russia.

Everyone should know about Nathan Gill, the bribes from Russia and the link to Reform.

My dear one must have rather more of an eye on “honest Bob”. Badenough would have us believe that most of his policies on immigration are filched from her. And if that’s true, then honest Bob gets the “credit”. Was he not waving judges wigs around in a “we’re coming for you” approach?

I recognise the difficulty but extreme conditions need extreme measures. Enmities however deep must be set aside. Common ground must be found and that is Europe. Not to mention basic decency. I think I can be accused of fantasy but we must combine against the forces of darkness or they consume us.

Labour needs to stand four square against this atrocity and yet, if the direction outlined in today’s Pecksniff is to be believed, it will be no time flat before Labour joins this move. Time now for the Burnhamites to stand up. To make common purpose with the Lib Dems, Greens, Plaid and the SNP.

Does this mean, I wonder, that there will be some kind of pact between the 3? No doubt that thought would be met with derision by the Philps of this world but with whom do they now intend to align? Obviously Trump and Israel. Perhaps entice Hungary into the new pool? What a position in which to be.

My dear Pecksniff, the piece was written before news that the Tories told us that they intend to leave the ECHR. It seems that also means leaving the Council of Europe. So they and RefUK now share the same desire to join Russia and Belarus outside of the tent, attempting to piss into it.

But he’s in no position to challenge for the leadership so it’s up to the strategists and the policy wonks to get around a winning formula which (and I hate to keep banging on about it) centres around our relationship with Europe. And in this, I have no idea what Burnham or “Mainstream” thinks.
porterjames.bsky.social
I have some reservations about Burnham but if you want “delivery” he’s your boy. If you want a finger on the pulse of popular opinion, he has some pull. He certainly has his critics but does sound rather more human than many other politicians. Crucially, rather more so than Starmer.
porterjames.bsky.social
So, if Starmer was McSweeney’s choice, he dressed him in “soft” Corbyn clothing and, if I recall, telling us that preservation of FOM was a red line. One assumes he is the author of the “Truss Attack” on Burnham. The idea that Burnham has the “qualities” of stupidity on a par with Truss is nonsense.

My dear, in the matter of the Labour leadership campaign of 2020, do you recall the names of the other candidates? Rebecca Long Bailey. In the immortal words of Private Eye, “shurely shome mishtake”. And, of course, Ms Wigan herself, Lisa Nandy. Neither of us would need McSweeney to win that one.

Looking at that piece a good many RefUKers would face deportation. How many of them pass the “good character” test?
porterjames.bsky.social
Ah, as Mr Robinson would say. Robert, that is, not the fascist.

Sadly I think it no longer exists but at least there is a part of the world in which we can find some comfort with its pro EU atmosphere, its delicatessens, its cafés and its, one must say it, lentils. You will be unsurprised to learn that the bulk of it is now represented by Greens. Is this a sign?
porterjames.bsky.social
More positively, I like the cut of the jib of Mr Lewin. Mr Lewis, we know and talk of the “Golden Triangle” reminds me of that wonderful publication “The Lentil” which, you will recall, was dedicated to the area. Panic set in with the news that world supply of Prosecco was due to dry up. My dear!
porterjames.bsky.social
Vis vis Mr Gwynne, I note that his most recent pronouncement is that he intends to serve the full term despite his health problems. “There will be no vacancy in Denton and Gorton” or some such so I’m guessing he’s not a Burnham man. I imagine he is not a “Your Party” man either!
porterjames.bsky.social
Thomas-Symonds is a lickspittle. If the tune suddenly changed he’d be proclaiming immediate membership. I’d say (more in hope than expectation) don’t rule it out. Desperation can lead to many unexpected destinations.
porterjames.bsky.social
Or we should send it to Pecksniff where, on arrival, it would be rapidly communicated to the relevant parties and McSweeney, in words known to all football fans, would be “sacked in the morning”. An in depth investigation into the finances of Farage would surely follow. A clean sweep for Pecksniff!
porterjames.bsky.social
Not a matter, I know, covered in the diary but one that baffles me. Yesterday, the Norwich Branch of the “Wise Men” unanimously carried a motion to the effect that this is total bollox and why doesn’t he sack McSweeney. We should send it to one of the “Your Party” committees for in depth analysis.
porterjames.bsky.social
Now, that may not be a deal breaker as she will no doubt take her lead from the Manchester guru himself, which would be no bad thing. So, I await the European contribution. Meanwhile, is it possible to conceive of a scenario in which Starmer didn’t know that Mandy was an accident waiting to happen?
porterjames.bsky.social
My dear Pecksniff you find your correspondent with a finger poised over a Mainstream communication’s “Join” button. It has not yet been placed there for 2 reasons. One, that there is no mention of Europe and two, that their candidate of choice as Labour Deputy Leader appears to be Lucy Powell.
