Hello world! I've rejoined social media after a long hiatus ... any other #indieDev or #gameDev folks out there?
Meet Calyx ❄️ The halfling frost mage I'll be playing in my next DnD campaign.

(Disclaimer: This is AI art - but if any hungry artists want to make him better, hit me up)
What if this image doesn't represent multiple servers in different regions, but logically represents what **one** dedicated game server could look like (logically)?

it’s cool how millennials were perfectly primed to see everything get really, really innovative as children and then see it all go down in spectacular flame as adults. we’re so lucky
There's just not enough room to describe what's going on in the server and client comms. I'll have to make a whole different video for it. 😆
I've been excited to build new groundbreaking multiplayer server tech after spending 15+ years at #Xbox & #halo.

Ignoring the crappy temporary dev-UI art, this showcases a city on a *persistent cloud realm* researching tech and producing units.

Hahaha! Too many years working on a team has trained me to at least have a few words so that future me can find where I messed up
git commits be like 😆

What source control do you use and why?

Oh nice! Yeah we have similar stuff for sure.

Yes, I have a "paper material" texture that I blend in, then I use the water mask to create shore ripples, and then animate blotch revealing that on each map slice as the map shader.

The mountains & trees are layered in with a diff shader.
PPM (portable pixmap format): an image format, but very bare bones: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netpbm

The PPM is essentially the biome channel/ctrl layer for me. Elevation comes in as an "alpine" biome & I paint on mountain stamps with it using a gradient.

Very cool you're doing dungeons too!

Whoa, just read your game site. Very interesting!
Thanks! I'll check it out. We could potentially collab, yeah! My generator is server side (multiplayer game) and spits out a ppm, and several masks (water, mountain, trees as one payload per slice.
Procedurally generated fantasy map w/ crappy sprites, v0.001. Making it functional before I make it more beautiful.

Oh... I also need to make it unload of course. 😉

Yeah sure! I subscribed on the site. 😎
Very cool. Love the game concept too
What settings do you like best?

Here's a super early screen recording of the animation for revealing a fantasy map that was procedurally generated.

For sure! I'll be posting some early screenshots / dev diary stuffs in the coming days
Working on a game with no generative AI when my job all day for work is to inject generative AI into my workflow is quite the juxtaposition. I think of it like a detox, or drinking an organic smoothie after having McDonalds. 😆
Perfect, thank you!
Hey thanks! Love the concept of your site, btw.
