When the FBI arrested Terry Rozier and Chauncey Billups, the basketball-watching public turned to sports media to help make sense of the story. What explanations were on offer?

Before disclosing its own BetMGM partnership, The Athletic called “all of sports” complicit in the scandal. Bill Simmons dismissed the episode as ”a couple bad apples,” growing pains typical of a growth industry. Zach Lowe had ESPN's betting guy on his podcast; together they concluded that these issues can be tinkered out of existence by limiting prop bets and changing how teams report injuries. Lowe's podcast, like Simmons's, began with a FanDuel ad.

The takeover of sports media by gambling companies imposes hard boundaries on the domain of these conversations. Most importantly, these captured discussions always obscure the social and political choices that enable the gambling industry to entrench itself.

Allowing people to gamble on their phones and allowing sports gambling companies to spend untold sums on lobbying and advertising are choices. These choices, not some law of nature, are why millions of people have started gambling in recent years. Likewise, other sports media companies have chosen to offer up their audiences as prey to gambling outfits.

Issues related to trans rights, including the trans athletes canard, have also consistently ranked near the bottom of most voters' priorities in polling. This would give some credence to the notion that Democrats are spending too much time focused on the issue
- or at least it would if it were Democrats who were running on. Instead, Axios reported in late October that Democrats had "spent nearly $9 million to refute the GOP attacks or hit back at Republican opposition to broader LGBTQ rights." That is more than nine times less than the onslaught of ads demonizing trans Americans. For those who think that the problem is that bemocrats were too vocal in their defense of trans rights, I beg you to explain that gap.

It's true that Trump and other Republicans went all in on anti-trans messaging this electior ycle. According to data from Ad Impact, the GOP spent roughly $215 million on network TV ads alone calling transgender people a threat to the American way of life!
That included at least $77 million in Senate races in 10 states between mid-July and late October and doesn't include any online ads on the issue. That was significantly more than the GOP spent trying to whip up anti-trans sentiment during the 2022 midterm elections.
That campaign strategy was a massive failure for the GOP then. There were no real gains to be shown for the GOP based on that rhetoric.

While parents are asked to consent to these surveillance programs, the school’s handbook says that there is “no expectation of privacy” on campus. If parents want to restrict recordings of their children outside of the school, they have to manually opt out of the “anywhere” option—as Jessica Lopez learned midway through her older daughter’s second year at Alpha. The girl says she remembers sitting on her bed one night working on schoolwork when she received a notification that she’d been flagged for an anti-pattern. She says Alpha’s system sent a video of her in her pajamas, taken from the computer’s webcam, that showed her talking to her younger sister.
