Simon, thanks a lot, this is a very unexpected but welcome development i gotta say

let me recover from the seasonal ague and also figure out if I'm ready to look like an absolute muppet, and let's talk?

You gently run your hand through the rack. You can feel it—pure cotton, rich wool, Irish linen. The plump buttonholes are handsewn; the buttons attached with a firm shank. You flip the price tag over. It's affordable

You buy the jacket and go home, which is only 15 mins away. Your apt is $600/month

a lot more, recently, due to me trying to figure out this coaching thing i keep hearing about. and yeah, you get amazing puzzles from comp prompts in positions that don't look all that complicated at first glance, sometimes

it's just of better quality i think, and yeah, having to watch far fewer short draws was a massive improvement even before this crop of young uns who all seem to despise playing for equality if they can help it. dunno, i always hedge but this one really does feel pretty clear cut to me

i mean, at this point, why the hell not. collect all the 'we're suddenly 0.4 by move 5 instead of 0.03' pokemon

that's just a nop from me. there are definitely areas where it is very much true, eg my music taste has barely developed since i was 20ish (I'm not proud of that, but yeah, it's the same few names plus Regina now). but chess is a lot more fun these days, even with all the advances in opening theory.

the app also logged me out and is refusing to let me back in, which in my current state is an unsolvable problem
might try later

yeah i didn't see be6, and i did spend some time thinking about it
polborta.bsky.social
i should try one again, but tbh i got stumped so completely the last time it kinda scared me off, and i went, tail between my legs, back to the minutecryptic back catalogue

im actually leaning nc6 because i haven't quite solved bd7 qc4. I'm sure we're fine but idk what the clean solution is - maybe Qb6? not in love with that. Nc6 bx bx qz bd7 qc5 rc8 qa3 00 intending to meet nf3 with bh3 seems very playable though, especially in shorter tcs.
polborta.bsky.social
Yeah that's a very nice touch

saw that earlier. v decent game. i'd have tried very hard not to play nd7 is my one quibble. both bd7 and nc6 seem fine, and that knight rarely belongs on b6 if c6 is available. both of those part with material though.

i think the answer is online chess xd
it (re)introduced chess to the audience we probably would never reach otherwise, gave youngsters direct assess to the best players in the world, there's a lot of positives you can list (commentary, anyone?)
the negatives aren't very hidden either though

you're still ok after kg8 (i think?) but yeah you'd have needed to regain your bearings quite quickly
polborta.bsky.social
that's genuinely heartwarming to hear, thank you

i'm hoping to, but as with many other things, it's on hold right now
polborta.bsky.social
yeah i think it definitely widens your horizons, it's just that there should be some kind of fair warning of the dangers before people embark on that journey. i'm very happy it's working out for you
polborta.bsky.social
yeah i think it works even with borderline zero cricket knowledge

larwood bio by duncan hamilton. sports books don't normally leave you misty-eyed, this one did for me

I think i saw that actually, maybe you posted it here before? I remember thinking nxa1 is a bit optimistic ;) did you actually work out Rf7 at the time? could have been a nasty surprise
polborta.bsky.social
there's a bunch of platforms that will provide you with puzzles to last you a lifetime, tailored to your level. coaching is very useful, and i would try to work on concepts more than memorization whenever possible. knowing openings is good, but understanding patterns is better
polborta.bsky.social
those are extremely attainable. in terms of biggest immediately noticeable progress, i've come to think that nothing beats solving. At your current level, games are defined by who commits fewer (or the last?) tactical mistakes.
polborta.bsky.social
can you post that? this is not a transition i've seen happen too often
polborta.bsky.social
pat is injured, and their batting doesn't seem as threatening as some of the previous sides, but I'm still quite queasy about it. dunno, 3-1 aus? 2-2 if things go incredibly well? (this is me trying out this new-fangled 'optimism' lark)
polborta.bsky.social
hmm. you know what, i think the sonewhat pathetic honest answer is no
polborta.bsky.social
IANAC but I'll try. let me ask you a question first, though. what are your goals in this?
