Andrew hi! My pal and I are debating set-mining. I feel like you wrote a piece about it, but can't put my hands on it. I know you did discuss it, I believe in a chat with Tommy at one point. Is there an article link? Thanks! @thinkingpoker.bsky.social
If you're in countless hands across a live cash session, you're effectively in no hands.
Hi Gary, such a beautiful space! I had a date there years ago. Memories are alive and well. I also love Fanelli's as a symbol of all things old(er) NYC. Though can't rate their martinis.
I wrote about @templebarnyc in my New Yorker martini crawl. God, how I love their use of olive oil in their martinis, which could become a disaster in the wrong hands.
BEWARE NOT THE BLUFF "People don't bluff nearly as much as you think they do. Tourney and cash pros win because they play big pots with the best hand. Not because they use advanced bluff strategies. They simply depend on the fact that you won't believe them." -- h/t Power Hold'em Strategy
Best of luck, Tricia! I wrote for the Voice at the very start of my writing life. Glad to be even a little bit connected to such an important institution.
I've never made a shortlist for anything! (Unless you count being on a list of very short people). I'm so honored to be a finalist for @bookcritics.bsky.social Award for Nonfiction with these books. 🙌
We're excited to announce the shortlist for the 2024 NBCC Award for Nonfiction! Congratulations to all of the finalists.
Consider and evaluate your entire cash session as a package. It's never just one interesting or complex hand.
It takes mindful practice to grow indifferent to starting hands, especially AA and KK. We see these hands and expect to win with them. I love Doyle's quote in SuperSystems: "I'd rather have A/K than either aces or kings. You win more when you make a hand, and lose less when you miss."
The stories we tell ourselves present demanding tripwires. I talk to countless players who repeat many of these internal narratives. One of the more popular is, "they know exactly what I have." Never true. www.philgalfond.com/articles/the... @jakenetter.bsky.social @recpokerjim.bsky.social

These four words are simple, but they’ve been incredibly valuable for me.

Poker is information warfare. When you give less than you get, you control the info balance and it shows in your confidence. The longer you tank, say, in any given hand, the more information you give up about your range. Equilibrium is fed by strong hand planning and fast action.
Fear in poker causes pain.
Capitalizing on your unfair share of pots is what separates the girls from the women in live-cash poker.
