In summary, the outlook is grim. It is highly likely that Thwaites Glacier will eventually be lost, which will destabilise adjoining parts of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, increasing the committed long-term rise in global mean sea level by more than 3 m.

1. It's fascinating to see, as you can from the responses to the post below, how many daft things people believe, to justify their continued meat eating. So let's examine a few of the common myths in the following thread. 🧵
For years, there's been a massive over-emphasis on food miles, and a massive under-emphasis on food type.
By far and away the best dietary decision you can make, for environmental, humanitarian and public health purposes, is to cut out animal products.
Remember this, whenever someone says "alternative proteins - yuck!"

It was a call I couldn't ignore.

I was formally invited by the Danish EU Presidency to Luxembourg to speak about industrial electrification and energy efficiency directly to the energy ministers from every single one of the 27 EU member states on the 20th of October.

Free Greta Thunberg and the rest of the illegally detained flotilla activists.
The framing of ‘giving up’ is a major issue IMO. My family changed to low(er) carbon way of eating, travelling, showering, etc, and all these things actually turned out to have improved life. People don’t reconsider their habits if it’s perceived as ‘going backwards’. That perception needs to change

We will regret not acting faster on climate change.
I detest overdimensioned cars like Landrover, RAM, Q8 and the likes in urban environments, but I also wish articles/discussions would start with defining “SUV”, cause in the EU the term has been hijacked by marketing peeps and covers a very wide range of cars these days.

2/ In 2001, Borsook said tech "libertarianism" reflected an adolescent mindset, with a craving for unchecked independence & resistance to constraint.

She warned that tech libertarians wanted an anti-human world that worked more like a computer. From "Cyberselfish," a book based on her 90s writing:

Critics of renewables often point to land use as a reason not to invest in wind & solar. Land use IS a real issue for all energy assets incl renewables (unless on-site).

But what critics conveniently forget is the huge land impact of fossil fuels. Aerial view of fracking sites in Wickett, Texas. 👇
Lijkt ook de enige verklaring waarom Rusland het EU luchtruim durft te schenden. Iemand heeft gegarandeerd dat de US niet zal tussenkomen.
The US is even telling Europeans openly now that they plan to cut military assistance to NATO counties bordering Russia. It’s not like Europeans have not been warned. www.reuters.com/world/europe...

I visited Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela 20 years ago, a lake that sits on top of on oil field.
Quite an eye-opener.
Inadvertently, this is an incredible illustration of how

(a) the infrastructure required for fossil fuel extraction is bonkers and

(b) how we don't consider our oil and gas to be 'destroying nature' like wind turbines simply bc it's undersea
