Make an effect size prediction!

@jamiecummins.bsky.social and I are replicating Balcetis & Dunning's (2010) "chocolate is more desirable than poop" (Cohen's d = 4.52)

Let us known in the replies what effect size you think we'll find. Details of the study in the thread below.

Afterthought: I wonder how selection of samples impact results, that is, I wonder how unguided self-help would work for typical patients seen in clinical practice, especially in terms of compliance and drop-out. Is there research on this?

Science can be such a headache sometimes.

This study has hit the headlines because the authors claim that it shows that soft drinks cause people to be depressed by negatively impacting their gut microbiome.

This is a fascinating story.

A Lebanese team published a study showing massive benefits for apple cider vinegar in 2024. People immediately noticed it was problematic, and complained.

BMJ asked the authors for the data, and they sent it through. The study has just been retracted and WOW 1/n

Ok. Fluoxetine was used as comparator drug in 9 trials, and efficacy was consistently smaller in these trials, though I don't know if these can be considered as having low risk of bias.
