the more i think about how background art and other assets are undervalued and the more people depend on gen ai, the more time and money into backgrounds and other assets will be spent in order to stand out: bsky.app/profile/high...

there was some discussion about how several japanese solo game developers are using gen ai background art, and i have my thoughts on it plus the state of free japanese games from someone who has covered indie/doujin games for years and have made my own stuff fairly recently:

to summarize, many royalty-free assets people rely on have not aged well as computers gain more and more bits in resolution size.

so people have been replacing or at least compromising graphic assets with gen ai stuff in order to complete projects
this is most visible in backgrounds because there's not that many people who are working on bgs

and this is likely going to be worse as players expect more higher production value in free and doujin games because gen ai slop looks "good"
i've been covering indie/doujin games for years, even making stuff myself. this is the worst the world of indie games is in right now. i think even if you like gen ai, you should be concerned that production value is going to increase and price out every solo dev
there's no way to stand out except to put more money into assets and marketing
you love gen ai? then you'll spend more time doing prompts.
you hate gen ai? then you'll spend more time looking for alternative resources.
i see no way out of this spiral. everything becomes more competitive
