Good morning from South Philly.

Even with their sports teams, they try to figure out how to do trips to other cities and weave in educational experiences. They recently went to DC to play against a school there and combined that with a visit to the US Capitol.

They’re also one of the few Philly high schools that offer the International Baccalaureate degree program which helps kids if they apply to universities outside the US.

Bodine has a pretty unique offering—they focus on ensuring kids have a global perspective so they have multiple international school trips available each year. They’ve also had an impressive list of global leaders give talks at their school.

Another high school tour at an under-appreciated Philly public high school, Bodine HS for International Affairs. First thing my son noticed was the neighborhood on his walk there. He asked if we could move to Northern Liberties if he goes to this school. 😁 bodine.philasd.org

Yes, trust me I know. :) There's only so much urbanists can do in pushing for better parks, more affordable family-friendly housing, better schools, etc. But while trying to get electeds on board, we can also redefine the narrative and say it's still worth raising kids in the city.

Cities have many challenges, but I think it's important urbanists start embracing a role of evangelist or "apologist" (a term usually reserved for religious contexts but perhaps valid here). We should defend and advocate the idea that cities are where the flourishing of human civilization occurs.

The president has declared war on cities and while all the attention is on him, he's just amplifying an anti-urban sentiment that's been festering for a long time. Sadly, I hear people, even those who seem reasonable, dismiss cities as "full of crime" and unsuitable for raising kids.

It sucks when a neighborhood or city are no longer affordable for artists. The city's culture becomes bland and dominated by corporate/commercial aesthetics. Yet I hear very few people talking about how to make cities affordable for artists.

I wonder how many people have the day off on Indigenous People's Day. It's a public school holiday and federal/state/city employees get it off. My company follows the federal holiday schedule so I get it off too.

I'm surprised by how much car traffic there is this morning though!

Philly feels pretty ideal. I know so many more artists and music in Philly because they can actually afford to live here and have studio space.
peterskim.org
There's gotta be some sweet spot of low rent + density that fosters an optimal music scene in a city or neighborhood. Hoboken used to be known for arts+music but since artists (who aren't already wealthy somehow) can't afford to live there, there's nothing good coming out of there anymore.

With the Phillies and Cubs out, I’ve swapped in some other caps into rotation.

I wonder if anyone can guess all three correctly without the help of the internet.

This Innocence Mission record is probably the prettiest record in my collection.

When I took this photo, I was really focused on the Di Bruno Bros sign, not noticing all the trash in front of their store.

When I first moved to Philly, I was disgusted by all the trash everywhere. But now, I'm clearly desensitized to it.

Stopped by a record store in Doylestown which had a 50% off new record bin. Found these two gems from Jenny Lewis and The Innocence Mission!

It sucks that cameras have become so friggin expense and they’re not even that much better than 10-15 years ago. I’m gonna use my Panasonic Lumix G7 until it dies.

The Philadelphia Film Festival starts Oct 16th! Make a plan to attend! filmadelphia.org/festival/

It’s a lot easier to understand what movies are showing by flipping through this beautiful 100 page program than clicking through the website.

And these are going into the closet. 😭 See you in April!

There is still hope! Let’s go Cubs!

This might be the last roll of film I shoot for a while. 😢 Sadly, the little knob that opens the back of the camera so I can insert/remove film broke somehow. I used expired color film and it didn't come out that well. Back to my relatively new 10 year old Panasonic G7.

Here we go again! Last night was a good night. Here’s hoping for another 2/2.

DJI makes *great* products and if you've had your eye on a DJI Osmo Action 5 (superior to GoPro) or DJI Mic 3 or Mic Mini (amazing little wireless mics for mobile recording), I recommend buying them while you can.

Why would DJI do this when it already sells the Osmo Pocket 3 here? It's facing a total import ban on all new gadgets *this December* and Trump doesn't seem poised to change that.

DJI products have been disappearing from shelves; it's on its last legs in US. www.theverge.com/report/69239...

Is DJI exiting the US drone market? The company says no.

That being said, most of us have important decision points in our lives where our choices can lead us into a life where we experience more diversity vs more homogeneity.

Living in a diverse neighborhood and having your kids enroll in public school are the easiest way to prioritize diversity.

The last time I had daily interaction with people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds was when I was in public high school 30+ years ago. And if that's true for you, I don't think we should be too hard on ourselves. Society is designed to segregate us and yes, we should try to fix that.
