In a study of 3,225 lumbar fusion patients, those screening high-risk for undiagnosed depression (on the PHQ-2) had nearly 2x higher odds of ED visits within 90 days. Pre-op screening using the PHQ-2 may help flag high-risk populations.

In a VA study of 14,500 surgeries in patients with cirrhosis, high-volume centers (>16 cases/past yr) had 36% lower risk of 90-day mortality vs. low-volume centers. Findings support triaging patients to high-volume centers when possible.
