I made this map showing the age of water and sewer infrastructure.

One way to use this data is to provide a rough timeline whenever the city says that an improvement will align with road renewal.

How long will that be? Pipes are designed for 80-100 yrs.

Bylaw officers should modernize their tools and move away from a complaint based model.

Example of modern tools. Storm sewer rates will soon be calculated by how much impermeable area you have on your property (asphalt, concrete, etc).The analysis involves aircraft imagery, GIS and AI tools.

I head again today from Ottawa By-law, they're no longer accepting reports for illegal driveway expansions or hardscaping or front yard parking. Apparently there are only 4 officers for these zoning issues and there are far too many reports than they can keep up with. They need more resources.

You mentioned that the city will be digging up the sewers in 10-15 yrs. I assume you mean on Gladstone?

FYI the only "old" section of sewer is between Lyon and Kent (1935). The remaining sewer/water pipes on Gladstone were installed 1993-2016. Is the city really going to dig them up in 10-15 yrs?

Over at @strongtownsottawa.ca we've calculated the productivity of different development patterns in #OttCity. Tax per hectare is easy.

Lately, I've been estimating the cost of servicing. These numbers are much more abstract but it's been fun.

More Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) data for College Ward.

Once the cameras were installed, the percentage of high-end speeds drops dramatically and general speed limit compliance improves.

An interesting observation. Drivers took ~750 days to drop speeds by 10 kph at Greenbank and Meadowlands.

Cassidy and Old Richmond Rd cameras are newer (~100 days in service) and initial speeds are closer to the limit.

Does this mean that the effects of ASE extend beyond their immediate area.

#OttCity has open data on Automated Speed Enforcement (ACE). Below driver behaviour from Stittsville.

The data show that Stittsville drivers slowed down after each ASE camera was installed. The changes are lasting too.

Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) is working in River ward.

You can see how quickly people slow down once the camera is installed.

Interestingly, speeds on the younger cameras started out fairly low. I wonder if this is because the effects of ASE extend beyond their immediate area.
