I suspect even quite a lot of the people saying we should tax wealth would get pissy if you said "that includes people's primary residence"

Some calculations on that I did elsewhere:

It's a sparse period in my record collection for sure.

We were a bit young for it and found it working backwards from bands we liked later. I've got to know a couple of people who grew up in that area around that time and it does seem like the music scene there was quite cliquey, same as in England I guess (eg I know almost nothing about PWEI)

Love that operation ivy record, Sound System was such an anthem in my teens.

Apparently people generally think that the years when they were aged 10 - 15 were the best for music, but in my case it is an objectively correct fact. Exhibit A - albums that came out when I was (roughly) 10:

Hey folks!

Here are the 32 best albums of 1989 as decided by you, the voters. If anyone asks you what the 32 best albums of 1989 are, you direct them to this official and binding list. The albums are presented in seed order, from highest to lowest, from most expected to be here to least expected. 🧵

And another vote saw an attempt to weaken security of tenure for postgraduate and mature students... also defeated!

And that's it for the Lords - Bill goes back to the Commons for a final vote so we'll have a Renters' Rights Act very soon!

Having a great meeting with all my colleagues that AI definitely didn’t lie about sending meeting requests to.

It's a pretty common viewpoint on the far left that Jews and Palestinians should all just live in a happy-clappy socialist state together. My point was just that Trump also thinking they should all live in a state together was an example of far right and far left having similar views.

Yeah, sorry mate, your Greensleeves has gone. I haven't got any in stock, I'll need to order one in. £100 cash or £120 card.
paulboldrin.bsky.social
Far left and far right people both like a one-state solution. Admittedly the one state would be quite different in each case.

One of my driving bugbears. Well done, you've saved yourself absolutely zero time and made me feel unsafe for no reason.

Horseshoe theory in action once again.

I have an investment in an arms manufacturer or mining company, I get funding from a Russian oligarch, I used to be in the army, my family has lands in former colonies.

Yes, and also clearly some other privatised industries have not underinvested at all, so there are situations where privatisation doesn't cause underinvestment.
paulboldrin.bsky.social
Yeah, it seems like a lot of the things blamed on privatisation are actually shambolic regulation. I guess the government would have more incentive to fix things if they were directly responsible.

Probably the most infuriating thing about a lot of left wing thinking is that because it doesn't like a lot of the answers that economics gives, it's easier to just... completely ignore it. Like, I wonder if there are any potential problems with giving free electricity and water to everyone?
paulboldrin.bsky.social
I did think like that but sometimes I'm sad that lots of books I loved didn't survive for my kids to read. Although I did get most of them from my dad so I suppose two generations is not too bad.

The deputy leader said just yesterday that they want to cut North Sea oil and gas taxes!

Do normal Americans have this obsession as well I wonder? Do they sit around in their bars going "Ho, ho, that British food eh?". Or is it just Bluesky Americans?
paulboldrin.bsky.social
We got a proper big one on wheels with a pipe to outside but obviously our place was in way worse shape. Keep an eye on the electrics as well, we had a socket which had got filled up with water and was sparking behind a cupboard.
paulboldrin.bsky.social
Anyway, get the insurance to pay for a massive dehumidifier! Glad you're OK and managed to limit the damage.
paulboldrin.bsky.social
Oh man this happened to us a few years ago but we were in the basement and the burst pipe was three floors up. Got woken up by my other half mumbling "it's raining a lot outside". The enormous ceiling rose collapsed on our bed about two minutes later, luckily I wake up quickly!

When our album Plumb was on the #mercuryprize list in 2012, we were only allocated two seats at the ceremony. Additional seats cost £400+VAT iirc so, just to have Kev and Andrew, our actual band members, at the table with us would have cost more than the entire recording budget for the album.
