Cold, drafty, far too many stairs and the hauntings...so many hauntings. I'd stick with Wigwams.

Another result of the UK government's 2020 inaction that people are playing for. I hope you're getting all the help you need.
outoforderbookclub.bsky.social
Sadly, there aren't any in the UK (or anything similar), so I guess this is another thing that must stay a dream! I'm feeling a healthy amount of jealousy at this moment.
outoforderbookclub.bsky.social
I live in hope, and it's the hope that kills you...that and governments driven by the need to put into place profoundly venal and stupid policies.

It's like a passive (non) approach of, 'Let's just give them whatever they want'. Despite the AI model of taking work without permission/payment vs. the billions brought into the UK by creative industries, it's almost as if they only listen to one side the argument...the side with access.
outoforderbookclub.bsky.social
I think it takes more governments seeing the creative work produced in their country as a 'treasure' to protect from AI. 'Treasure' is a perfect word because it is valuable as a creation, but also has great economic value as well. That attitude seems to be sadly lacking in the UK government.

Saturday's podcast looks at 'The Obsidian Throne' by J.D. Oswald aka @jamesoswald.scot. Listeners will know, I haven't read many fantasy series, so in the 'out of order' spirit of reading widely, I jumped right into the final book in a five book series. Did I get as lost as Errol and Sir Benfro?

*still racists and misogynists!

Out of context this correction looks odd...
outoforderbookclub.bsky.social
Are they racists and misogynists? I'm going to take a punt and say...yes. Yep. Absolutely. 100%. Indeed.

This is an interesting read and I have to agree, at least from my experience. This week I'll be publishing a podcast about a fantasy novel which dealt with issues of life, aging, guilt - tons of themes. I'm constantly talking about genre fiction which deals with big ideas in a nuanced way.

The wifi may be patchy, but if you look like this walking around each day, then your stealth mode is also not working either! Sounds like it's worth it though!

The bitesize episode about 'Save the Cat' is out. It's a quick 25(ish) minute look at a book that you may know well but I hadn't a clue about! There are few tangents (promise!) except one on petite women in fiction. Tangent or rant? I'm not sure...

Out of Order Bitesize: Save the Cat (2005)
Welcome to the first bitesize edition of Out of Order Book Club! It's about half the size of our usual podcast and the aim is to take a quick look at a book that has been recommended from a listener, ...

I've seen quite a lot of articles in the last few months (by people over 60?) about this, at the same time I've seen plenty of young people reading physical books on trains (and in bookshops and in libraries). It's almost as if this pearl clutching might be, well, a bit off the mark.
outoforderbookclub.bsky.social
Thanks for the recommendation. Thanks also because I might do a quick re-edit and mention that this book exists! Can I use your recommendation?
outoforderbookclub.bsky.social
Thanks. Yeah, I ummed and ahhed about that because they kept talking about Blake Snyder's 'Save the Cat' rather than this variation. However, it's no spoiler to say I found Snyder's book interesting, but not entirely useful. I think with this nudge I'll put this on the list as a follow up.

Side note: I know nothing about cats, so on the alt text I've just written 'orange cat', but is that a particular type?! I had a search online, and I think it is an American shorthair.

Plus, I found the Cornish Rex quite striking or a little unnerving. I'm not sure...

On Saturday, I'll be posting my bitesize 25 min. episode on 'Save the Cat' by Blake Snyder. It was mentioned several (total = 3, maybe 4!) times by novelists at Harrogate Crime Writing Festival this year, so I decided to give it a read. Can a screenwriting book really help a wannabe novelist?

I'm so happy to share this, I only discovered it through following someone else. I've had a dip in and out since I started following, and it's fascinating stuff and, more importantly, valuable work. Definitely worth a follow!

Well, isn't that just the definition of health and safety gone mad? That loin cloth must be far more impressive than it looks.
outoforderbookclub.bsky.social
You just need to pass it off as every bottle had a particular valuable memory attached...the symbolism of binning two double wheelie bins of memories is a problem though!

I finally got to 'Rosy and John' on my list, and it was great. I wasn't sure, considering the size (not a good way to pre-judge a reading experience!), that it'd be an interesting addition to the series but it certainly is. I'm putting together a bitesize episode on it. Thanks for the suggestion.

My three questions were definitely waffly because I often change my mind half way through recording that bit, but I was struck by how often you start describing situations with odour. Anne's favourite flowers. The opium cure. The morgue (obviously!). Wyndham's own odour. Is that conscious decision?
