From @conservacatgal.bsky.social "What was actually in these magic pills? No idea. Did they contain a dangerous ingredient? Was there a lawsuit? Or did they just not sell well? Who knows? All I know is one day they were gone, and without them I gained weight again" ordinary-times.com/2025/10/13/f...

From @captainkudzu.bsky.social "Trump and MAGA are so securely protected by their bubbles of confirmation bias that they don’t see the growing tide of discontent and domestic problems. Maybe they actually think that they are doing a good job and that voters are pleased despite the polls"

"Gwen Shamblin’s heresy was just a variation of the old prosperity gospel disguised as a weight loss seminar. God wants you to be rich and happy and THIN! You just need to pray harder. And if you’re still fat (or poor) it’s because you don't have enough faith"
Fat Girl Diaries: The Weigh Down Diet, or When Weight Loss Becomes a Religion - Ordinary Times
The real-life story of Gwen Shamblin shows the folly of relying on your own code of conduct over God's.

From @burtlikko "On that day, here’s what protests at the ICE facility in Portland looked like, described by one journalist as “a thoughtful young man in a chicken suit”

The next day, Hegseth announced federalizing 200 troops to protect the ICE building from “domestic terrorists” such as this"

“War could be used to crack down both on political opponents and immigrants…Trump could be follow[ing] the example of Woodrow Wilson, who used WWI to jail political opponents, establish a network of government informants, assume control of large parts of the economy, and persecute unions.”

From Michael Hirschbrunnen "There is no point in a truce, because we are talking about tens of millions of people here who behave independently and will not follow a “cease fire” on cancellations. We used to have social norms against this kind of behavior, but now they’re gone"
Cancel Culture Never Ended - Ordinary Times
Cancel culture is a fighting style, a dirty fighting style, and without social norms your opponent will stop using it just because you have.

Today is my Portlandversary! On this day in 2018 I closed on my home and became a Portlander. This was the climax of an intentional effort to restructure my life after an annus horribilis.

I'd thought to write a post about it at @ordinarytimes.bsky.social but it didn't feel focused enough.
