Not just saying this because I wrote a contribution, but James’s planned book looks really interesting from a broader cultural perspective, covering an aspect seldom thought about when it comes to orchards. I think worth supporting the kickstarter if you can!

I was tempted... but not quite.

And the last component, Kirchensaller Mostbirne. Just a little of them.

And now a dessert pear, the lovely Kieffer’s Hybrid originally from Pennsylvania.

Showing the Luxemburger Mostbirne, which makes up 10% of the pear bill in Levitation.

Catching up on some video posts. This is going to get very boring for anybody not interested in perry pears, but a short series explaining each of the pears that feature in our 2025 Levitation perry, pressed last Saturday.

Yes please, I'll have a hardcover copy of this one.

I'm going to say "probably", based on personal experience. Egremont Russets from the supermarket are often dry, soft and bland. Whereas the ones I was picking at work yesterday are juicy, crunchy, sharp-sweet, with a definite honey note, absolutely delicious 😋

Ah, we're talking supermarket apples? In that case I'm in 100% agreement 🙂

A few years ago you could get decent 'Discovery', 'Red Windsor', 'Egremont Russet', even 'Norfolk Royal Russet' from the supermarkets, but it seems they've given up even on those.

Or, to be fair, perhaps they're picking actual late-ripening, long-keeping apples? Heritage varieties that will keep in a cool room on slatted shelves, the way it used to be done? Bit hard to tell without the rest of the article for context... 🤔

Hysteranthous -blossom before leaves. Pears do this. Apples which flower a few weeks later take the usual leaves first course to the spring weather shielding the delicate flower buds from frost etc Pear have evolved to flower dramatically as early as possible in to attract bees but take that risk.

The best I’ve seen in the flesh, a serious botanical art talent. If I didn’t already have this signed print by Elizabeth Cameron my head may well have been turned.

That's rather lovely. Reminds me of the great Victorian pomonas.

We'll be at Shipley Harvest Market this Saturday with a fine selection of 🍏🍎, some of our magnificent trees and make lots of juice for free fun.

I have to admit I've always found meditation tricky. I get easily distracted, then I get frustrated by my own distraction. Which rather defeats the object... 🙄

Hey @applebluesky, can anyone fill me in on an apple sold to me as "Tipp Pippin"? It looks like a redder Cripps Pink and has dense breaking-crisp flesh. On the sweet side.

It is Irish.
