Elokuvan piti dekonstruoida sotaa, mutta siitä tulikin merijalkaväen mainosvideo. Leffa oli vain yksinkertaisesti liian seksikäs. Taitava kameratyö ja tiivistunnelmaiset kohtaukset veivät mukanaan.

Tutkimuksessa on sittemmin todettu, että "Full Metal Jacket" vaikutti myönteisesti värväytymiseen.
