Just finished reading "Ring The Bells" by C.K. McDonnell. Another great addition to the Stranger Times series. I could take or leave the plot, but the characters and humour made this a really enjoyable read. Love spending time with these books.
Album of the Day 924
Little Jackie - The Stoop
Friday pop! Toe-tapping tunes and a combination of witty & angry lyrics. It's a damn fine mix. Perfect for the walk home from work, washed the stress away.
Album of the Day 923
Tricky - Maxinquaye
More music from my PhD days. Still sounds incredible.
Album of the Day 922
Polygon Window - Surfing on Sine Waves
Confess I prefer early Aphex/RJ stuff like this. It's playful & inventive but more grounded in melody than later (more talked about) releases. It's an easier & more enjoyable listen (to my old ears (same comments go for Autechre, sorry)).
Finished reading "Warlock Holmes: A Study in Brimstone" by G.S. Denning.
A friend lent me this & I'm so glad he did. A fun read & a highly entertaining take on Watson/Holmes. Will be reading more of them (which is always a good sign).
Album of the Day 921
Kraftwerk - Radio-Activity
Slightly weird, slightly more interesting. Doesn't seem to get the love that other Kraftwerk albums do, which is a shame. Personally, love it (today, I was listening to the 3-D The Catalogue version, hence the cover below).
Album of the Day 920
Boom Bip - Seed to Sun
A great album from the early 2000s. Mostly instrumental hip-hop with a wonderful sense of melody (along with fun beats & samples). Recommended.
but it is a great cover (and kind of reminds of b12's Time Tourist). Guess you truly can't judge a book by its cover.
Album of the Day 919
Jo Johnson - Alterations Volume One
Another beautiful album. Perfect for tuning out the rest of the world.
Album of the Day 918
Skalpel - Konfusion
Start the week with some jazz (or at least, the downbeat electronic version of jazz). I had totally forgotten that I had this CD (& its predecessor). A total shame as it is rather ace!
Album of the Day 917
Alva Noto / Ryuichi Sakamoto / Ensemble Modern - Utp_
The collaborations between AN & RS are a delicate combination of noise, glitch/electronics & piano. This expands the sound compared to earlier releases. How can something so minimal be so beautiful?
Album of the Day 916
Cocteau Twins - Lullabies to Violaine Volume 1
A brilliant collection of singles/EPs etc. Atmospheric, idiosyncratic and just wonderfully listenable. Every time I come back to CT I seem to have forgotten just how good they were. Makes for a good Saturday!
Album of the Day 915
Field Lines Cartographer - Moonbuilding Sessions
One 40 minute song, this is a wonderful way to drift into Friday evening. The seission builds slowly, pulling you into another world. All of FLC's releases have been beautiful escapes & this is no exception.
Album of the Day 915
Depeche Mode - 101
Still one of my favourite DM albums. There is a good mix of tracks & the songs have more heft than the album versions. It just works well.
Finished "The Impossible Fortune" by Richard Osman. Loved it. I know people criticise 'cosy murders' but a) great characters; b) wry observations that make me smirk; c) a melancholy undertone make this both moving & really enjoyable. Surely that's all you need from a book?
Album of the Day 913
Aho Ssan & Resina - Ego Death
Wow! This is incredible. An amazing mix of cello/strings & electronic noise/distortion. Works so well, the result is dramatic, a little challenging but eminently listenable (if you like this sort of thing!). Recommended.
Album of the Day 912
Nathan Fake - Crystal Vision
Absolutely charming album. Across varied electronica & fun melodies there is something warm & appealing. One of my favourite NF releases.
Album of the Day 912
Jo Johnson - Escape Now
Otherworldly ambient. It made a perfect start to a grey spring morning.
Album of the Day 910
Kelly Moran - Don't Trust Mirrors
Each KM album gets better & better. A mixture of piano/treated piano & electronics. A minimalist album hiding warm melodies.
Album of the Day 909
Patrick R. Pärk - Time-Lost Warrior Narratives
I love that many of the musicians I listen are inspired by the same music yet the results are so wonderfully different. This is kosmische musik/krautrock but unlike the music already on this list. It is ace.
Album of the Day 908
Spiritualized - Royal Albert Hall October 10 1997
An amazing live album (& an amazing gig, I'm clapping in the background). I hadn't heard any Spiritualized before getting free tickets to this (through my postdoc fellowship) & I'm so glad I went. (my PhD lab was above the z).
I never grow bored of this ... I was about to say it's stunning start/opening to an album but it doesn't really let up. The whole album does it every time.
Album of the Day 907
Rhian Sheehan & Arli Liberman - Traces
I've enjoyed RS's previous releases but this is something else. The other albums seemed like collections of tracks, but this is more coherent with a distinct/unique style. It flows like a single piece. Totally immersive, I love it.
Album of the Day 906
Everyday Dust - Existence X
I love what ED does with sound/noise. Each piece evokes an emotion. Yet to hear a bad ED release.
Album of the Day 905
Sarno Ultra - Sarno Ultra
The wonderful mixture of styles on this make it so listenable; IDM, glitch, breakbeat, techno ... it's all in here but grounded with a sense of fun & melody. One of my favourite recent releases.
