Last kayak expedition of the year with the lad, warm autumn sun, lake like glass. Thanksgiving weekend at my brother’s house. #Kayak

Bermuda history is everywhere. Outerbridges were 17th century settlers in Bermuda. One of her brothers, Joseph Outerbridge, is well known in Newfoundland for philanthropic work with fishermen’s associations and the Wilfred Grenfell medical missions.

In 1874, Mary Ewing Outerbridge brought home America’s first tennis set — and customs agents seized it.

She got it back, built a court on Staten Island, and changed women’s sports forever.

History turns on curiosity, persistence, and a little nerve.

Is it really a sport if everyone can wear that much jewelry?

Is there a grain of truth to this? If so, people will lose their marble.

Mara is the Shepherd. Astrid Von Streusel is the tiniest adult all black cat you’ve ever seen. Astrid mostly lives next door now with her friend Wuschel the black and white cat.

Captain Morgan, master of disguise, hides from the German Shepherd (who is now staring at his tail). #Cats

Ok, this is pretty funny stuff. One story in Bermuda’s Royal Gazette from Feb 1846, a second story from Dec that same year. First, great praise of former sergeant and now hotelier Wm Oldfield’s honour and integrity. Second, ah well, Wm Oldfield has absconded owing thousands of dollars. #Bermuda
Story from Bermuda’s newspaper February 1846, reporting a social event at the Royal Hotel, attended by officers of the XX Regiment, who praise their old comrade Wm Oldfield, now proprietor of the hotel. They describe his excellent character and great honour. Story from later that year, and reporting that Wm Oldfield has absconded clandestinely, on a ship to New York, leaving behind debts in the thousands of dollars.

Spousal unit hosted, at one of the research centres where she is director, the Indigenous Tourism Board’s familiarization event last night, w Indigenous food providers from across Canada, and dinner by three Indigenous chefs. We now have a gifted jar of clear bear fat. Not sure what to save it for.

Ah yes, a colleague here was just telling me he did more or less the same thing. In person, in his case. She must have been used to it I suppose. The NFB film about her is quite good, as I recall.

In thinking about Dr Jane Goodall, I'm reminded of Canadian zoologist Dr Anne Innis Dagg, who slightly proceeded her into the field study of African mammals. Historians of North America may know her father Harold Innis' work on political economy, communication theory, and staples theory. Corny but:

Hehe. One of my Glasgow nephews once said of Edinburgh types: if you’ve pissed yourself they’ve shat themselves.

But crude but similar sentiment. That first one just so perfectly describes a kind of person everyone knows (unless you are that person).

If you’ve been to Tenerife they’ve been to Elevenerife.

Might be my new favourite Britishism. Language play is so delicious.
