Looking for recs on climate resilience / adaptation and anything New Jersey
$100M to raise roads in just a few spots. Now multiply that by 100 (which is conservative). That's $100B.

This is not a comment on the specific project. It is a comment on the extreme costs it will take just to make towns livable in a warmer world. Is this really the direction we want to take?
Berkeley’s $100M Idea To Stop Flooding
BERKELEY – The township is looking into federal funding to elevate a number of roads to prevent the flooding that seems to be happening more and more every year.   It used to be that only low-lying ar...

The Resilient NJ program, administered through DEP’s Office of Climate Resilience, will use this round of funding to provide grants of up to $300,000 to municipalities that join other to establish self-identified regions, and then work to develop regional Resilience Action Plans.
What this article avoids is the difficult question of whether these homes can, or should, be saved. It may sound callous but we’re going to face thousands of such decisions. With limited resources for #ClimateResilience we can’t protect everything everywhere forever. There are no easy answers left.
Near North Wildwood, Grassy Sound residents fear their homes will soon float away
The marshland of Grassy Sound — a roughly 180-acre island straddling both sides of North Wildwood Boulevard — is deteriorating rapidly, and residents fear it will eventually wash away.

I’m still on leave so won’t be covering this as normal, but this is a report that folks across NJ should read
🌎 Responding to the Economic Risks of Climate Change 🌎

Rising seas, increasing heat, wildfires, and heavier flooding are projected to strain New Jersey’s transportation networks, energy supplies and water infrastructure. (1/4)
Climate change is having, and will continue to have, an outsized impact on the #NJ economy. This new report by @dep.nj.gov lays it out in stark terms. It’s time to invest in #ClimateResilience.

As an aside, the clickbait framing of headlines on @nj.com has become obnoxious and embarrassing.
With increasing heat due to climate change and the rising costs of electricity, this new #NJ law to prevent utility shutoffs in the summer is a literal lifesaver. #ClimateResilience
These N.J. residents won’t face summertime utility shutoffs under new law
The new program prevents utility companies from disconnecting service for certain customers during the summer months.

"One project potentially affected by the pause is the New Jersey Back Bays Coastal Storm Risk Management Study."
How many more signs do we need to tell us that our reliance on the Army Corps for New Jersey's resilience needs is a fool's game? #NJ must establish stable state funding to support our state agencies and communities invest in #ClimateResilience.
Army Corps halts some large-scale flood studies
The agency intends to reevaluate whether nonstructural projects, such as home elevations, are a good use of its resources.
